Bismarck (Prairie Public Radio CSi Cable 77 Audio) – Bret Dockter has been named the 2021 North Dakota Teacher of the Year.

State school superintendent Kirsten Baesler made the announcement at the Capitol Monday.

Bret Dockter is a sixth grade teacher and coach at B. M. Hanson Elementary School in Harvey. He was chosen from among four finalists for the honor.

Dockter says when the call came that he was the winner, he couldn’t believe it. But he says teaching is a rewarding profession.

Dockter says the last 18 months has been challenging to him and to his colleagues. And he says he hopes to never go back to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when classrooms were empty and students were learning online.

Dockter says the pandemic did teach him to make every day count.

The other finalists for Teacher of the Year were Heather Ell, first grade teacher at John Hoeven Elementary in Minot; Shari Jerde, a teacher at Grand Forks Community High School;

<and Matthew Nielsen, a science teacher at Valley City High School.

Valley City 9/26/2021 Mayor Carlsrud’ Message

Hi Folks,

Dave Carlsrud

Valley City High School had its Homecoming last weekend with coronation, parade, football game, Fifty-Year Class reunion and more. A large crowd turned out to watch the many different parade units.  Kudos to the Parade Committee and all who contributed to a successful VCHS Homecoming.

You may have noticed the many people, young and old, wearing the white “Hi-Liner Pride” t-shirts around town. Thank you to Missouri River Energy Services, our partner in Valley City Municipal Power, for sponsoring the shirts.

Public Power Utilities across the United States celebrate “Public Power Week” the first week in October each year. We are fortunate as having municipal power though our Publics Works Department as it affords us reliable power at great rates! Our power is usually on anywhere from .99997% to 100% of the time on a monthly basis. That is pretty amazing. Thanks to all who make it happen.

Valley City State University will be holding its Homecoming this weekend. The football team will host Mayville State University; please check website and social media for more events.

The Bridge City Cruisers will be hosting “Cruise Valley City” and the “Under The Lights Car Show“ Friday October 1st. The “cruise” will begin at 5:30 from the Rosebud Parking Lot and the “show” will begin at 7:00. For further information please call Myron at: 701-840-9421. Thank you Bridge City Cruisers.

Thank you to contributors again this week.

“Talent is God given; be humble. Fame is man-given; be grateful. Conceit is self-given; be careful.”        (John Wooden)

Blessings, Respect Others, Be Kind and Pray,

In world and national news…

(ABC News)  A federal judge approved a plan Monday to unconditionally release John Hinckley Jr., who had shot and wounded former President Ronald Reagan in 1981, from all remaining court-ordered restrictions, if he continues to follow rules and agrees to undergo regular mental health examinations.

U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman said he plans on issuing his ruling on the plan later this week, the Associated Press reported.

JOPLIN, Mont. (AP) — Federal investigators are examining overturned rail cars and a stretch of tracks as they try to determine why an Amtrak train derailed in rural Montana over the weekend. The accident killed three people and hospitalized seven others. The westbound Empire Builder was traveling from Chicago to Seattle when it left the tracks Saturday afternoon near Joplin, a town of about 200. The train had two locomotives and 10 cars, eight of which derailed. The derailment occurred near a switch in the line, where one set of tracks turned into two, on a stretch of track that had just been inspected. Federal officials were expected to provide an update later Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) — R. Kelly has been convicted in a sex trafficking trial after several accusers testified in lurid detail how he subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage. A New York City jury of seven men and five women found Kelly guilty Monday on a racketeering charge. Kelly was accused of running a Chicago-based criminal enterprise that recruited his accusers for unwanted sex and mental torment. Kelly was also convicted of criminal counts accusing him of violating the Mann Act. The act makes it illegal to take anyone across state lines “for any immoral purpose.”

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have banned barbershops in a southern Afghanistan province from shaving or trimming beards, claiming their edict is in line with Shariah, or Islamic, law. The order in Helmand province was issued by the provincial Taliban government’s vice and virtue department to barbers in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital. During their previous rule of Afghanistan, the Taliban adhered to a harsh interpretation of Islam. Since overrunning Kabul on Aug. 15 and again taking control of the country, the world has been watching to see whether they will re-create their strict governance of the late 1990s,.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has had his COVID-19 booster shot. Monday’s booster shot came days after federal regulators recommended a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for Americans age 65 or older and approved them for others with preexisting medical conditions and high-risk work environments. Biden is 78. He got his first shot on Dec. 21 and his second dose three weeks later, on Jan. 11, along with his wife, Jill Biden. The first lady was teaching Monday at Northern Virginia Community College, where she is an English professor. Biden has been a champion of booster doses since the U.S. experienced a sharp rise in coronavirus cases from the delta variant in the summer.

SAN MARINO (AP) — Pope Francis has repeated the Catholic stance that abortion is “murder,” a day after the tiny republic of San Marino became the latest Catholic state to legalize the procedure. The measure passed overwhelmingly, getting 77% of the 14,384 votes cast Sunday in the microstate surrounded by Italy. It makes abortion legal in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion would also be legal beyond that point if the woman’s life is in danger or if her physical or psychological health is at risk because of fetal malformations. The Catholic Church, which holds that human life begins at conception and that all life must be protected, strongly opposed the ballot measure, while women’s rights groups cheered the results.

(AP)  The Biden administration is proposing a new rule that would shield hundreds of thousands of immigrants who came to the United States as young children from deportation. It is the latest maneuver in a long-running drama over the legality of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The proposal seeks to satisfy concerns of a federal judge who ruled in July that the policy was illegal. Prospects for legislation have dimmed in Congress, and it’s likely the new rule will also face legal challenges. And because DACA isn’t the product of legislation, it falls into a category of policies that can more easily be changed from one administration to the next.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Greyhound Lines Inc. will pay $2.2 million to settle a lawsuit over the bus line’s practice of allowing U.S. Customs & Border Protection agents to board its buses in Washington state to conduct immigration sweeps. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced the settlement Monday. The lawsuit contended the Dallas-based bus company failed to warn customers of the sweeps, misrepresented its role in allowing the sweeps to occur and subjected its passengers to discrimination based on skin color or national origin. The money will provide restitution to those passengers who were detained, arrested, or deported after immigration agents boarded buses at the Spokane Intermodal Center.
