In world and national news
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York jury has convicted a former associate of Rudy Giuliani of charges that he made illegal campaign contributions to influence U.S. politicians and advance his business interests. The verdict convicting him on all counts was returned Friday in Manhattan federal court. Lev Parnas was on trial for more than two weeks as prosecutors accused him of using other people’s money to pose as a powerful political broker and cozy up to some of the nation’s star Republican political figures. The case had drawn interest because Parnas had been involved in Giuliani’s efforts to get Ukrainian officials to investigate Joe Biden’s son. Giuliani wasn’t charged in the case.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A highly anticipated nonpartisan audit of the 2020 presidential election in Wisconsin did not identify any widespread fraud in the battleground state, which a key Republican legislative leader says shows that the state’s elections are “safe and secure.” The report released Friday by the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau did make dozens of recommendations on how the state might improve its elections. Republican state Sen. Robert Cowles, who co-chairs the Legislature’s Audit Committee, says he hopes the report leads to bipartisan fixes for the issues the audit identified, but that the state’s elections, overall, are “safe and secure.” Wisconsin is one of several states pursuing investigations into the 2020 presidential election.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and Congress’ top two Democrats are strategizing on how to wrap up their giant domestic legislation. Biden had breakfast at the White House with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined the discussion in a conference call from New York. Their meeting came as the party continues scaling back the measure and devising a way to pay for it. Biden and the Democratic leaders hope to reach agreement soon between the party’s progressives and moderates in Congress. The White House says Biden has “rolled up his sleeves” to review details. Pelosi says a deal is “very possible”
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says the tangled supply chains and shortages that have bedeviled the U.S. economy since this summer have gotten worse and will likely keep inflation elevated well into next year. But he says the Fed is not yet prepared to lift its benchmark interest rate. Powell has previously said that shortages and higher prices are mostly a result of the pandemic’s impact on supply lines, with factories in Asia temporarily closing amid COVID infections and dozens of cargo ships anchored offshore. The Fed chair spoke at a virtual conference Friday hosted by the South African Reserve Bank.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Earlier this year, an insistent cry arose from business leaders and Republican governors: Cut off a $300-a-week federal supplement for unemployed Americans. Many people, they argued, would then come off the sidelines and take the millions of jobs that employers were desperate to fill. Yet three months after half the states began ending that federal payment, there’s been no significant influx of job seekers. In states that cut off the $300 check, the workforce — the number of people who either have a job or are looking for one — has risen no more than it has in the states that maintained the payment.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing the Texas law that bans most abortions to remain in place for now, but has agreed to hear arguments in the case on Nov. 1. The justices said Friday they will decide whether the federal government has the right to sue over the law. The court’s action leaves in place for the time being a law that clinics say has led to an 80% reduction in abortions in the nation’s second-largest state. The law bans abortions after cardiac activity is detected, usually around six weeks of pregnancy. That’s before some women even know they are pregnant. Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that she would have blocked the law now.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Alec Baldwin says the killing of a cinematographer who died after Baldwin fired a prop gun on a movie set was a “tragic accident.” He posted the remark Friday on Twitter as authorities investigated the shooting, which also wounded the director. Halyna Hutchins was cinematographer on the Western “Rust.” She was 42. The shooting happened in the desert on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico. A spokesperson for Baldwin says a prop gun with blanks misfired. A spokesman for the Santa Fe County sheriff says detectives are looking into what type of projectile was discharged and how. It was not clear if Baldwin was performing at the time of the shooting.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Peter Scolari, who appeared on the TV series “Newhart” and Girls,” has died. His manager says Scolari died Friday morning in New York after fighting cancer for two years. The versatile character actor first gained attention as Tom Hanks’ co-star in the sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” in which their characters disguised themselves as women to live in an affordable, females-only apartment building. The two actors became pals and went on to work together in Hanks’ film directorial debut, “That Thing You Do!” and in the Broadway play “Lucky Guy.” Scolari’s survivors include his wife and four children. He was 66.
