Dickinson improves to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in the North Star Athletic Association. VCSU drops to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the NSAA.
VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – A defensive struggle went the way of Dickinson State on Saturday as the top two teams in North Star Athletic Association football clashed for the conference lead.
No. 23-ranked Valley City State held a 7-0 halftime lead, but Dickinson State scored two second-half touchdowns to edge the Vikings, 14-7.
Valley City State drops to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Dickinson State moves to 5-2 overall and 5-0 the conference. Dickinson State leads the NSAA standings while Valley City is now third behind Waldorf.
Both defenses turned in impressive performances Saturday, holding the offenses to season-lows for points. VCSU’s defense intercepted four passes and held the Blue Hawks to 30 points less than their season average of 44 points per game. Viking linebacker Jahidi West had three interceptions – all in the first half – as he tied VCSU’s single-game school record for interceptions. The Vikings also held Dickinson to a season-low 271 yards – which was 183 yards below their season average.
Despite being held down, the Blue Hawk offense found a way in the second half scoring on a four-yard run by Riley Linder and a one-yard rush by quarterback Drew Boedecker. Both touchdowns were set up by long passes of 43 yards and 49 yards to Kaden Kuntz, who gained more than half of Dickinson’s 183 passing yards on the two plays.
SCORING SUMMARY
The teams were scoreless for much of the first half, trading short drives before the Vikings put together their lone touchdown drive of the game late in the first half. Set up by West’s second interception at the Dickinson State 47-yard line, the Vikings chewed up 6 minutes and 37 seconds of clock before Justice Bice found the end zone on a five-yard rush. The extra point by Nico Magana sent the Vikings to the locker room with a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings maintained their momentum in the third quarter, moving deep into Blue Hawk territory on their second drive of the half. Facing a fourth-and-1 from the DSU 26-yard line, the Vikings went for it and were stopped and the momentum began to shift.
Four plays later, Boedecker hit Kuntz for his first big pass reception and the Blue Hawks punched in their first score to tie the game. Dickinson scored its second touchdown on the next drive, taking a 14-7 lead with 12:02 remaining in the game.
The Viking defense appeared to have a game-changing play on Dickinson’s next drive as VCSU safety Anthony Russell stepped in front of a receiver for an interception and was off to the races towards the end zone. Kuntz was able to catch Russell at the 5-yard line though and poked the ball out from behind, allowing Dickinson State to recover in the end zone for a touchback.
After another defensive stop, the Viking offense again drove deep into Dickinson State territory but could not convert on a fourth-and-6 from the 16-yard line. The Blue Hawks took over on downs with 2:21 remaining. The Viking defense forced a three-and-out, allowing the offense one more chance, but Dickinson’s defense held again and forced another turnover on downs to end VCSU’s last chance.
WEST TIES RECORD
The three interceptions by Jahidi West are the most by a Viking since Chauncey Calhoun did it in 2006. He is one of just six Vikings to accomplish the feat. West now has seven interceptions this season and is just one shy of tying the school record of eight interceptions. As a team, VCSU leads the entire NAIA this season with 18 interceptions, which is one away from VCSU’s team record of 19 interceptions.
STAT SUMMARY
Valley City State had 258 yards of offense, including 128 rushing and 130 passing. Dickinson State gained 271 total yards – 88 on the ground and 183 through the air.

MLB-CARDINALS-MANAGER
Cards to promote Marmol to skipper
UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals plan to announce Monday that bench coach Oliver Marmol will be promoted to replace fired manager Mike Shildt. That’s according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t revealed the hiring publicly.
The Cardinals dismissed Shildt over organizational differences on Oct. 14, a week after St. Louis lost to the Dodgers on a walk-off homer in the wild-card game. The Redbirds got into the playoff game on the basis of a team-record, 17-game winning streak in September.
MLB-WORLD SERIES-ASTROS
Astros’ Valdez to start Game 1 of World Series vs Braves
HOUSTON (AP) — The starting pitchers have been announced for Game 1 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and visiting Atlanta Braves.
Framber Valdez gets the nod for the Astros following a brilliant performance in his previous start. He is the only hurler in the postseason to last eight innings, allowing one run and three hits in a Game 5 victory over the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series.
The Braves will counter with Charlie Morton, who pitched for Houston from 2017-18 and got the win in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series.
MLB-LABOR
Work stoppage almost certain on Dec. 2
HOUSTON (AP) — Baseball’s ninth work stoppage and first in 26 years appears almost certain to start Dec. 2, freezing the free-agent market and threatening the start of spring training in February.
Negotiations have been taking place since last spring, and each side thinks the other has not made proposals that will lead toward an agreement replacing the five-year contract that expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 1.
The luxury tax system that started with the 2003 season sunsets with the expiration of the labor contract, with the exception of completing accounting and payments for the 2021 tax year. Uncertainty over the 2022 season probably will cause high-spending clubs to delay reaching pricier player agreements.

A search warrant affidavit includes details with camera operator Reid Russell, who told a detective that Baldwin was rehearsing a scene Thursday in which he was set to draw his gun while sitting in a church pew. The camera wasn’t rolling when the gun went off, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. LONDON (AP) — Former Facebook data scientist turned whistleblower Frances Haugen plans to answer questions from lawmakers in the United Kingdom who are working on legislation to rein in the power of social media companies. Haugen is set to appear Monday before a parliamentary committee scrutinizing the British government’s draft legislation to crack down on harmful online content. It will be her second appearance before lawmakers after she testified before the U.S. Senate this month about the danger she says the company poses, from harming children to inciting political violence. The U.K. government’s online safety bill calls for setting up a regulator that would hold companies to account when it comes to removing harmful or illegal content from their platforms.
ST. MARY, Mo. (AP) — A suspected tornado damaged buildings and knocked out power in communities along the state line between Missouri and Illinois, and damage was reported in other parts of the states from severe weather. The National Weather Service says one suspected tornado moved Sunday night through St. Mary, Missouri, about 55 miles southeast of St. Louis, before crossing the Mississippi River into Chester, Illinois. A suspected tornado also hit Sunday night near Fredericktown, Missouri.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A powerful storm barreled toward Southern California after flooding highways, toppling trees and causing mud flows in areas burned bare by recent fires across the northern part of the state. Drenching showers and strong winds accompanied the arrival of an atmospheric river — a long and wide plume of moisture pulled in from the Pacific Ocean. Flooding was reported across the San Francisco Bay Area. To the north, the California Highway Patrol closed State Route 70 in Butte County because of mudslides within the massive Dixie Fire burn scar. The weather service’s Sacramento office warned of “potentially historic rain.”
BEIJING (AP) — Global stock markets rose Monday after Wall Street slipped and China tightened travel controls in some areas in response to coronavirus infections. Shanghai and Hong Kong advanced while London and Frankfurt opened higher. Tokyo declined. On Wall Street, futures for the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 0.1% higher. A province in China’s northwest closed tourist sites after coronavirus cases were found and the capital, Beijing, banned visitors from areas with infections in the past 14 days. China has reported only a few dozen new cases, but Beijing’s strategy of shutting down travel prompted concern the economy might suffer.
