Briar Cliff 41 Jamestown 38
Jamestown (UJ) The University of Jamestown football team held nearly every statistical advantage against Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the one they didn’t was the final score.
Luke Davies threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Okoro with 68 seconds left as the Chargers came away with a 41-38 win at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.
With 14:20 left in the second quarter, Jimmies running back Chris Sayler got blown up by Akil Muhamad who laid on the field motionless after the play. He was immediately attended to by both team’s trainers, and then be stretchered off the field. Later in the game, Muhammad was released from the hospital and came back to the sideline.
Cade Torgerson (JR/Billings, Mont.)’s nine-yard scoring pass to Javon Bowie-Monteiro (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) with 1:47 remaining in the third gave Jamestown a 24-20 lead going into the final quarter. Briar Cliff responded with a five-play, 68-yard scoring drive capped off by a 17-yard run by Stanton Lee to retake the lead at 27-24.
Torgerson found Micah Madyun (FR/Ramsey, Minn.) for a 20-yard touchdown pass at the 5:22 mark to put the Jimmies in front 31-27. The next Charger possession resulted in a six-yard pass from Davies to Okoro, finishing up a seven-play 75-yard drive that made it 34-31 with 2:41 to play.
For the second time on the day, Torgerson and Bowie-Monteiro found the end zone, this time a 49-yard score with 1:36 remaining, to give UJ a 38-34 lead. Spencer George took the kickoff 58 yards to the Jimmie 34-yard line, setting up the Chargers with excellent field position. On second down, Davies completed a 30-yard pass to Tim Brown, and one play later tossed the go-ahead score to Okoro.
On the Jimmies’ last drive, Torgerson connected with Bowie-Monteiro for 17 yards and Marcus Giles (JR/Coon Rapids, Minn.) for 18 more to get to the Chargers’ 29-yard line. After an incomplete pass to Micah Madyun with six seconds left, UJ sent out Izaak Myles (JR/Apple Valley, Calif.) for a 46-yard field goal attempt. Myles’ kick had the distance but was just to the left of the goal post. One second and one kneel down later, the Chargers handed Jamestown their fifth straight defeat.
Torgerson completed 34-of-55 passes for 435 yards and threw for four touchdowns while also running 17 yards for another score. He also broke the Jimmie record for pass attempts (52) he set earlier this season. Isaiah Roebuck (FR/Marana, Ariz.) tied a Jimmie single-game record with 10 catches and had 152 yards receiving. Bowie-Monteiro finished with seven grabs for 106 yards and two scores. Madyun (six catches, 53 yards) and Giles (four catches, 64 yards) each had a touchdown catch. Frankie Ingraldi (FR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) carried nine times for 57 yards, including a long of 25.
Paul Vandal (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) led the defense with five tackles. Keagan Schiele (FR/Alexandria, Minn.), Jordan Olson (JR/Prior Lake, Minn.), Hershell Jefferson (FR/Pensacola, Fla.), and Rashawn Benners (FR/Dayton, Ohio) all finished with four tackles. Russell Oritz had a sack while Vandal and Mitch Swartz (JR/Peyton, Colo.) combined for another.
Jamestown is on the road next Saturday at Morningside (Iowa) University for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
