Update

Jamestown (CSi)  The Jamestown Rescue Squad and Jamestown Rural Fire Department were called to a rollover crash that occurred about 10:55 a.m., Wednesday at 34th Street Southeast, near the intersection of 77th Avenue Southeast.

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says when the Jamestown Rescue Squad arrived, about five miles west of Jamestown, a local farmer with a telehandler with forks and front-wheel assist tractor with a loader  safely lifted the vehicle  to assist the ejected female passenger.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office report said the male juvenile driver lost control of the vehicle on a gravel road, entering the ditch.

He rolled on top of a female juvenile passenger and she was ejected from  the passenger side window.

The female passenger was transported by Jamestown Area Ambulance to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center, and later flown to Rochester, Minnesota for treatment.

Her condition was not immediately released.  The driver was not injured.

Seven City Fire Department Rescue Squad members were on the scene, with 15 firefighters on standby  and the fire station if needed, but were not called to the scene.

The Rescue Squad was on scene about a half hour.

JRFD was on the scene assisting with a water supply if needed, however no fire was reported.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Enrollment declines at North Dakota’s institutions of higher learning haven’t been as steep as elsewhere since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to a new report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, enrollment across the country at colleges and universities is down 6.5% compared to two years ago, which is the largest two-year enrollment drop in the last 50 years. Overall North Dakota colleges and universities experienced a 3.4% decrease in enrollment from 2019, and a 1.4% decrease from 2020. A few schools have experienced enrollment increases, including the University of North Dakota.

Bismack (NDUS)   – The North Dakota University System (NDUS) has opened the search for the president of North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) and is now inviting applications and nominations for the position.

The State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) and the NDSCS Search Committee seek a leader with experience and insight to advocate for NDSCS as it pursues its core mission of academic excellence and meeting regional workforce needs. The president will need to work with the campus, local, and statewide communities to map and assess strategic and action plans to ensure NDSCS reaches its full potential to serve the needs of the community as well as the NDSCS students.

The new NDSCS president will succeed Dr. John Richman, who will retire from the university on Dec. 17, 2021. The person selected for the presidency will assume office by July 2022.

Co-chairing the NDSCS Presidential Search Committee are Jeffry Volk, SBHE member, and Terry Marohl, NDSCS associate professor and transportation department chair.

After the listening sessions involving the NDSCS community, staff, students and faculty, Marohl said, “It is clear that the new president is expected to commit to an environment of inclusion and transparency, which will continue to involve faculty, students, staff, and partners in decision-making processes as they help to set and meet the highest standards. The president must be an enthusiastic spokesperson for NDSCS with internal and external constituencies, continually advancing its mission highlighting its innovative academic and workforce development programs.”

Volk added, “The president must possess vision and be an ethical, compassionate, creative, communicative, and energetic leader who can join forces with all constituencies, internal and external, to lead NDSCS into the future.”

More information about the search process, the advertisement, and other information can be found at this link: https://www.ndscs.edu/President.

For best consideration, applications and nominations should be received by January 3, 2022.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — House and Senate budget writers in the North Dakota Legislature have adjourned after failing to reconcile differences on how some federal coronavirus should be spent. Republican-led House and Senate appropriations committees on Wednesday agreed largely initiatives that include infrastructure improves to childcare programs. But the Senate’s proposal for a $25 million upgrade to a building at Minot State University and a $30 million revolving loan fund for hospitals were among the sticking points for House negotiators. The committees plan to resume negotiations Thursday. The $1.1 billion in federal coronavirus funds the state received represents the largest deposit into state coffers in history.

Women

Jamestown  2  Dakota Wesleyan  1

Box Score

(UJ)  The No. 22 University of Jamestown women’s soccer team moved one step closer to an outright GPAC regular season championship Wednesday night, defeating Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University 2-1 at the Jimmie Turf Field.

Jamestown won its 16th match of the season, setting a new program record, and moved to 11-0 in the conference. Briar Cliff (Iowa), tied with UJ entering Wednesday’s play, lost 2-0 to Midland (Neb.), and are one game behind the Jimmies in the standings. A Jamestown win on Saturday would give UJ its first GPAC conference championship.

Gabby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia) had the first goal of the match, taking advantage of a rebound off a blocked shot and netting her fourth of the season in the 17th minute.

The Jimmies controlled possession for nearly all of the first half, allowing the Tigers just one shot, saved by Alex Nowka (JR/Anchorage, Alaska) in the 33rd minute.

UJ kept a 1-0 lead until the 82nd minute, when Claire Struble (SR/Murrieta, Calif.) took a Kamryn Fiscus (JR/Yakima, Wash.) pass to score her third of the season, doubling the Jimmie advantage.

DWU’s only shot of the second half came in the 83rd minute as Brooke Bullington notched her first goal of the year to make it a one-goal game. Jamestown was able to keep the Tigers from finding the equalizer and held on for the win.

Shots were 18-2 Jimmies, as were shots on goal (7-2). Jamestown won seven corner kicks while conceding three.

Saturday’s regular season finale against Briar Cliff is set for 1 p.m. at the Jimmie Turf Field.

Men

Jamestown 1 Dakota Wesleyan 1 (2 OT)

Box Score

(UJ) For the third time this season, the University of Jamestown men’s soccer team played to a double-overtime draw. Wednesday’s match against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University ended 1-1 after 110 minutes at the Jimmie Turf Field.

Jamestown, 6-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the GPAC, has qualified for the conference postseason tournament and will close out the regular season Saturday at home against Briar Cliff (Iowa) University at 3:30 p.m.

Despite outshooting the Tigers 10-1 (4-2 on goal) in the first half, the Jimmies held a slim 1-0 lead at the break on a 41st minute goal from Max Gross (SR/Boeblingen, Germany), assisted by Eric Fairtlough (SR/Varese, Italy).

DWU found the tying goal in the 84th minute as Benjamin Lazcano made it 1-1. Jona Toussaint (FR/Berlin, Germany) had a shot go wide left of goal in the 85th minute, and Hendrik Romahn (JR/Osterburg, Germany)’s 88th minute attempt was saved by the Tiger keeper.

Each team had a potential game-winning goal whistled offside, and tempers began to flare in the first overtime. Both teams argued for a penalty kick after having a player fouled in the box, but to no avail.

In the second overtime, Diego Valle (SR/Yucaipa, Calif.) got free on a breakaway in the 108th minute, but his shot went over the crossbar. Gross had the Jimmies’  last attempt on goal as time ran out, only to shoot wide of the post.

Jamestown outshot the Tigers 19-6 (7-3 on goal). UJ won nine corner kicks to DWU’s four.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A tornado in western Louisiana damaged more than a dozen homes in a part of the state still struggling to recover from repeated weather disasters. The National Weather Service said in a preliminary report posted on Twitter that an EF-2 tornado caused “significant structural damage” to about a dozen homes when it touched down around midday Wednesday. Several other homes also received minor damage. Two people were injured. The tornado was part of a line of severe weather that moved from Texas across southern Louisiana and into Mississippi. Wednesday’s severe weather was the latest weather calamity to batter the Lake Charles region in a little over a year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top executives at ExxonMobil and other oil giants are set to testify at a landmark House hearing Thursday as congressional Democrats investigate what they describe as a decades-long, industry-wide campaign to spread disinformation about the role of fossil fuels in causing global warming. The much-anticipated hearing comes after months of public efforts by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee to obtain documents and other information on the oil industry’s role in stopping climate action over many decades. The appearance of executives from ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP America and Shell has drawn comparisons to a similar, high-profile hearing with tobacco executives who famously testified that they didn’t believe nicotine was addictive.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top Democrats say a deal is within reach on President Joe Biden’s big domestic bill. But tempers have flared as a paid family leave proposal fell out and a billionaires tax plan ended up scrapped, largely to satisfy one pivotal senator. Biden is heading to Capitol Hill on Thursday to urge Democrats to wrap up talks and bring the social services and climate change bills at the center of his domestic initiative “over the finish line.” Biden wants an agreement before he departs later Thursday for global summits overseas. Democrats are eyeing a surtax on those with more than $10 million in income to help pay for the plan.

LONDON (AP) — British lawmakers are set to grill Facebook and other tech giants over how they handle online safety as European efforts to regulate social media companies gain momentum. Representatives from Facebook, YouTube, Google, Twitter and TikTok will be questioned Thursday by members of a parliamentary committee scrutinizing the British government’s draft online safety legislation. Governments on both sides of the Atlantic want tougher rules aimed at protecting social media users, especially younger ones, but the United Kingdom’s efforts are much further along. The hearing comes the same week YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat were questioned by a U.S. Senate panel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and Democrats are getting low marks from the public as they try to get a roughly $2 trillion spending package over the finish line. Fewer than half of Americans approve of how they’ve handled negotiations. And many say they know little to nothing about the bill. Overall, 36% say they approve of Biden’s handling of the talks, while 41% disapprove. Another 23% say they neither approve nor disapprove. That’s according to The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. Ratings of Republicans’ role in the situation are even worse. Republicans have been shut out from the talks over the bill. They’re expected to overwhelmingly, if not unanimously, oppose the Democratic package.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine is suffering through a surge in coronavirus infections and deaths, along with other parts of Eastern Europe. While vaccines are plentiful, there is widespread reluctance to get them in many countries, although there are some notable exceptions. Only about 16% of Ukraine’s 41 million people are fully vaccinated, the second lowest share in Europe after Armenia. Experts say the slow pace of vaccinations is rooted in a variety of factors, including public distrust of government officials and past experiences with other vaccines. Others blame certain religious beliefs, misinformation that is circulating on social media and reliance on nontraditional medical treatments.
