SIOUX CITY, Iowa (UJ) — No. 3 Morningside University scored early and often Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Jamestown football team 70-7 at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Mustangs (8-0) found the end zone eight times in the first half, with seven of their scoring drives stretching at least 53 yards.
Jamestown drove 95 yards in six plays over a span of 2:19 for its lone touchdown of the day, a 44-yard pass from Cade Torgerson (JR/Billings, Mont.) to Steve Justice (SO/Henderson, Nev.).
Morningside added a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to round out the scoring.
The Jimmies finished with 278 yards of total offense, 199 of them coming through the air. Torgerson completed 15-of-38 passes for 183 yards. Justice was the top UJ receiver on the day, catching seven passes for 102 yards.
Chris Sayler (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) carried nine times for 46 yards, including a long of 20.
Aaron Mack (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) led the defense with seven tackles, while Joey Carlblom (FR/Sparks, Nev.), Jordan Olson (JR/Prior Lake, Minn.), Brooks Canfield (SO/Tempe, Ariz.), and Jed Rantz (FR/Arroyo Grande, Calif.) all had six. Jimmies 2 Briar Cliff University 2-2 Tie
(UJ) The 22nd-ranked University of Jamestown women’s soccer team won its first regular-season GPAC conference title Saturday afternoon while clinching an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship with a 2-2 draw against Briar Cliff (Iowa) University.
The Jimmies needed either a draw or a win against the Chargers to take the top spot and make the national tournament field for just the second time in program history (2005).
UJ finishes the conference schedule with an 11-0-1 record and is now 16-0-1 overall. Jamestown hosts eighth-seed Dordt (Iowa) University Thursday at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s match got off to an ominous start as BCU got the game’s first goal inside of eight minutes. Taylor Alkire took a shot over the head of Jimmie keeper Alex Nowka (JR/Anchorage, Alaska), who managed to get fingertips on the ball, but the shot continued into the net despite the best efforts of Haley Dyer (JR/Honolulu, Hawaii) to kick it away.
Kamryn Fiscus (JR/Yakima, Wash.) drew the Jimmies level in the 11th minute, giving the home team a sense of relief after falling behind early. Both teams understood the urgency of the pending result, and the physicality of play picked up as the half went on. A total of 13 fouls and five yellow cards in the opening 45 minutes kept the referee busy.
Eve Hoppe (SO/Temecula, Calif.) nearly put UJ ahead in the 53rd minute but her shot hit off the crossbar, then Fiscus was denied by Darrien Sclafani in the 75th minute.
The 81st minute saw the deadlock broken as Flor Suarez made it 2-1 for the Chargers. Penelope Hoppe (SR/Temecula, Calif.) then countered with the biggest goal of the year so far for Jamestown, scoring in the 86th minute to even the match at 2-2.
In the first overtime, Nowka made three key saves to keep Briar Cliff from the win, then in the second overtime it was Sclafani keeping the Jimmies from the win with a save of a Gabby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia) header.
The closing seconds of the match saw Jamestown appear to score the game-winning goal, but the linesman had ruled the Jimmies offside, and the match ended in a draw.
Nowka finished wth six saves and Fiscus had three of UJ’s six shots on goal.
Men’s Soccer
Briar Cliff University 3 Jamestown 1
(UJ) The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team lost its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at the Jimmie Turf Field, falling 3-1 to Briar Cliff (Iowa) University.
Despite the loss, the Jimmies still qualify for the GPAC postseason tournament and will be the seventh seed. UJ will travel to No. 2 seed Briar Cliff Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match.
Sebastian Justiniano (15th minute) and Michael Virgen (28th) had first-half goals to put the Chargers up 2-0 at the half. Jamestown had just two shots in the opening 45 minutes, both of which went right of the post.
Virgen notched his second goal of the match in the 49th minute to put BCU up 3-0, but Diego Valle (SR/Yucaipa, Calif.) answered in the 51st minute on an assist by Aaron Pike (SR/Milton Keynes, England) to get the Jimmies back within a pair of goals.
UJ outshot Briar Cliff 7-5 in the second half and finished with a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Alex Hamer (SR/Solihull, England) had five saves for Jamestown.

Jimmies take second straight GPAC regular season title.
(UJ) The No. 1 University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team won its second straight GPAC regular-season title Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 9 College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in four sets at Harold Newman Arena. Set scores were 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22.
Jamestown, now 27-0 and 15-0 in the GPAC, finishes the regular season Tuesday against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at 7:30 p.m.
After a service error by the Jimmies tied set one at 8-8, UJ came back with three straight points to go ahead 11-8 and never looked back. An Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) ace gave UJ its largest lead of the set at 17-10, and the Flames would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
With set two tied 13-13, CSM took seven of the next 10 points to take a 20-16 lead. Jamestown was able to trim the lead down to two at 20-18, and again at 22-20. Unfortunately, the comeback was snuffed out with three Flame kills and a Jimmie service error.
CSM led 11-9 before a 12-2 UJ run turned the tide and gave the home team an eight-point edge. Backed by a raucous homecourt crowd, Jamestown closed out the set with kills by Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.), Taylor Sabinash (SR/Kensal, N.D.), and Holen.
In the fourth set, the Jimmies led 15-12 after a Corina Huff (SR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) kill, but the Flames rallied to tie the set at 16. Following a service ace, CSM made it a one-point UJ advantage, but Jamestown once again rose to the challenge, scoring four of the last six to wrap up the match.
Four Jimmies finished with 10 or more kills–Holen (13), Huff (12), Aleah Zieske (FR/Spicer, Minn.) (11), and Hegerle (10). Zieske made just one error in 17 attempts and hit .588 for the match.
Jackie Meiklejohn (SR/Dickey, N.D.) (30 assists, 15 digs), Megan Gaffaney (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) (24 assists, 12 digs), and Holen (13 kills, 24 digs) all had double-doubles. Ellie Holen (SO/LaMoure, N.D.) posted 16 digs and Hannah Schiele (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) 14.
Jayla Ritter (SR/Forest Lake, Minn.) had five total blocks, followed by Huff, Hegerle, and Anna Holen with three each.
