(VCSU)FOREST CITY, IOWA – Valley City State rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to pick up a tough road victory Saturday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association football action.
The Vikings shut out Waldorf University in the second half and scored touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to secure a 21-14 come-from-behind victory.
It was the second time this season that the Vikings edged the Warriors by a touchdown, handing Waldorf both of its losses. VCSU is now 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the North Star Athletic Association. Waldorf University drops to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Saturday’s win was also the 150th career victory for VCSU head coach Dennis McCulloch. He is the all-time wins leader in VCSU football history and ranks sixth among active NAIA coaches. Assistant head coach Gregg Horner and linebackers coach Dave Rausch have been with the Viking coaching staff for all 150 victories.
SCORING SUMMARY
Waldorf University scored first on Saturday as quarterback Jordan Cooper hit Zach Morel for a 5-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead just seven minutes into the game. Valley City State answered back with an 86-yard touchdown drive later in the half. Justice Bice punched it in with a 4-yard touchdown, capping the 13-play drive and tying the game early in the second quarter.
Waldorf would regain the lead with a 47-yard touchdown rush by Cooper, taking a 14-7 lead into halftime.
The second half belonged to the Vikings. VCSU’s offense put together scoring drives of 85 yards and 77 yards to take the lead, and the Viking defense allowed just 100 yards in the second half as they shut out Waldorf.
VCSU’s third-quarter scoring drive covered 85 yards over 14 plays and was finished off by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Pfeifer to Michael Cornelious. The second scoring drive covered 77 yards in 10 plays and was capped by Pfeifer finding Jacob Gottenborg for a 6-yard touchdown. The extra point by Nico Magana gave the Vikings a 21-14 lead with 12:09 remaining.
The Warriors moved into Viking territory with their last-gasp effort to tie the game, but VCSU linebacker Jahidi West forced a fumble at the Viking 35-yard line with 20 seconds remaining. Dustin Kasowski recovered the fumble for VCSU and the Vikings were able to run out the clock on the road victory.
STATS SUMMARY
The Vikings forced three turnovers during the game. Along with West’s late forced fumble, Georgie Mageo forced and recovered a fumble on a kickoff and Anthony Russell intercepted a pass.
The Vikings out-gained the Warriors 355-287 in total offense, and VCSU turned the ball over just once. West totaled 10 tackles to lead VCSU’s defense, while Kasowski had eight tackles and Sal Avila finished with seven tackles and one for loss. Riley Gerhardt totaled seven tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss, and Jerrod Williamson added six tackles and a tackle for loss.
Pfeifer completed 17 out of 26 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Bice totaled 119 yards rushing and a touchdown on 23 carries. Benjamin Dumond caught seven passes for 71 yards, and Bice had four catches for 56 yards. Jorun Hamre and Faaris Amegankpoe both had two catches, and Cornelious and Gottenborg each had one catch for a touchdown.

The Vikings will close out the 2021 season at home next weekend, hosting Dakota State University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Viterbo def VCSU 3-0 25-14,25-13,25-23
LA CROSSE, WIS (VCSU) – The Valley City State volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 2 Viterbo Saturday afternoon 25-14, 25-13 and 25-23.
The nationally ranked V-Hawks collected 48 kills on a .343 hitting percentage while holding VCSU to 22 kills on a .087 attack percentage.
Viterbo improves to 32-1 overall and remains undefeated in conference play with a 12-0 record. Valley City State drops to 13-15 overall and 8-4 in the NSAA.
Viking senior Katie Juarez tallied five kills Saturday, bringing her career total to 972 kills. Juarez surpassed Karen Rawlings in the VCSU record book and is tied with Sarah Hiebert to rank 9th all-time in career kills.
Juarez also added a team-high 13 digs Saturday while Kallene Klever chipped in eight. Sadie Hansen finished with 17 set assists and six digs, and Bailey Nelson totaled 10 kills Saturday.
Viterbo’s Miah Garant totaled a match-high 16 kills on a .714 attack percentage to pace the V-Hawks Saturday. Maya Roberts chipped in 12 kills and Adrianna Reinhard totaled team-high 19 digs.
Lauryn Sobasky tallied 23 set assists and Abbey Johnson finished with 18 assists and eight digs for Viterbo.
The V-Hawks took an 8-1 run in the first set to build an 11-5 early advantage. Viterbo finished the set with three kills and a service ace to win the first set 25-14.
In the second set, Viterbo held a narrow 13-10 advantage until a Maya Roberts kill sparked a seven-point rally for the V-Hawks. The Vikings would not recover as Viterbo won the second set 25-13.
Then in set three, Valley City State opened with a 9-5 lead including a pair of kills from Makayla Wetzel. VCSU held on to keep a tie at 17-17 when Viterbo scored the next four straight points. As VCSU trailed 23-19, the Vikings took three straight points capped by a kill from Juarez to trail 23-22. A kill by Nelson held off Viterbo’s match point but a final kill by Katie Frohmader finished the set 25-23 in favor of the V-Hawks.

Dordt 104 VCSU 74
(VCSU) The Valley City State men’s basketball team dropped a non-conference road game Saturday night, falling 104-74 at Dordt University.
Dordt shot 61 percent overall, scorching their home nets en route to the victory.
Valley City State drops to 0-2 on the season. Dordt improves to 3-1. The Vikings will look to find the win column Wednesday night when they host the University of Minnesota-Morris. VCSU’s women tip at 5 p.m. on Wednesday with the men’s game to follow at 7 p.m.
Duoth Gach made five 3’s and scored 17 points off the bench, and Jalen Addison scored 16 points to lead the Vikings in Saturday’s loss.
VCSU shot 39 percent overall (27-70), 45 percent on 3’s (13-29) and 58 percent at the line (7-12). Dordt finished the game at 61 percent (39-64), 30 percent on 3’s (7-23) and 91 percent at the line (19-21).
