Jamestown (CVHD) In anticipation of the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for pediatrics, Central Valley Health District (CVHD) is planning to host a COVID vaccination clinic for children 5- to 11-year-old. The vaccination clinic will be held on Thursday, November 11 in the main entrance of the Jamestown Civic Center from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
The vaccine’s safety was studied in approximately 3,100 children ages 5 through 11 who received the vaccine and no serious side effects have been detected in the ongoing study.
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age is administered as a two-dose primary series, 3 weeks apart, but is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than that used for individuals 12 years of age and older (30 micrograms).
CVHD Unit Administrator, Robin Iszler says, “Adult COVID vaccine and child COVID vaccine are not interchangeable.” The pediatric vaccine will be manufactured and packaged specifically for pediatrics.
To ensure safety and comfort of the children of our community, CVHD is hosting a special clinic for those who meet the qualifications for the child vaccine. CVHD is anticipating receiving approximately 200 pediatric Pfizer doses of COVID vaccine next week. Doses will be limited, and attendees must pre-register in order to receive the vaccine. To register for an appointment, visit the www.centralvalleyhealth.org/covid-vaccine/.
Due to limited space, please limit attendance of the event to the child receiving the vaccination and one parent or guardian.
Again, the vaccination clinic will be held in the main entrance of the Civic Center, while COVID testing will be occurring simultaneously in the Exchequer Room of the Civic Center that day.

(AP) Schoolchildren take the spotlight this week as the U.S. enters a new phase in COVID-19 vaccination aimed at curbing deaths, hospitalizations and more than a year of disrupted education. With authorities promising enough vaccine to protect the nation’s 28 million kids ages 5-11, pediatricians’ offices, pharmacies, hospitals and schools were poised to begin the shots after the final OK late Tuesday. Many locations planned mass vaccination events in coming days. The vaccine — one-third the dose for teens and adults — requires two shots three weeks apart. Children who get vaccinated before Thanksgiving will be fully covered by Christmas.

(UJ) The top-ranked University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team added another impressive accomplishment to its resume Tuesday night with a home sweep of No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University.
Jamestown finished the regular season with a 16-0 conference record and 28-0 overall record, the first time in program history the team has taken a perfect record into the postseason.
The Jimmies will be the top seed in the GPAC posteason tournament, which begins on Saturday. UJ hosts Doane (Neb.), the eighth-seed, at 7 p.m.
Offense was the key for UJ in Tuesday’s victory as the team hit .434 with 54 kills. On the other side of the net, DWU hit just .075 and had 23 kills.
Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.)’s kill broke a 5-5 tie in the first set and sparked a 6-0 Jimmie run. The Tigers would get no closer than three points (12-9) and trailed by as many as eight after an attack error gave Jamestown a 22-14 edge.
Another 6-0 run in set two by the Jimmies took a 10-10 tie into a comfortable 16-10 lead as Holen, Jayla Ritter (SR/Forest Lake, Minn.), and Aleah Zieske (FR/Spicer, Minn.) all registered kills during the run. Back-to-back kills by Corina Huff (SR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) put Jamestown up 21-12 for the biggest lead of the set.
DWU trailed by just three (9-6) in the third set, only to have UJ score 16 of the final 21 points for a convincing set and match win. Jamestown hit .394 in the frame while holding the Tigers to a -.061 hitting percentage.
Holen led the Jimmies with 12 kills and 18 digs. Hegerle finished with 10 kills and Zieske nine. Taylor Sabinash (SR/Kensal, N.D.) led the team with a .700 hitting percentage (7 kills in 10 attempts). Ritter ended with six total blocks.
MLB-WORLD SERIES
Hammerin’ Braves win 1st WS crown since 1995, rout Astros
HOUSTON (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have won their first World Series championship since 1995, hammering the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6. Jorge Soler hit his third home run of the Series, and Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson also connected.
Max Fried got stomped on in the first inning, then delivered the best start of the entire World Series for the champion Braves. Fried got 18 outs against the 19 batters faced after his right ankle got stepped on by Michael Brantley’s rubber cleat in the first inning. Fried became the first pitcher in this World Series to complete six innings.
Steadied by 66-year-old manager Brian Snitker, an organization man for four decades, the underdog Braves won the franchise’s fourth title.
Freeman hit an RBI double and then punctuated the romp with a solo home run in the seventh that made it 7-0.
By then, it was a total team effort. Ailing star Ronald Acuña Jr., the dynamo of Atlanta’s future, bounded from the dugout to join the celebration for Freeman, the longtime face of the franchise.
Consider it a tribute to the greatest Braves player of them all, Mr. Hank Aaron. The Hall of Fame slugger died Jan. 22 at 86, still rooting for his old team, and his legacy was stamped all over this Series.
The loss denied 72-year-old Astros manager Dusty Baker the crown.
Jorge Soler was a bit player during the Chicago Cubs’ drought-smashing victory over Cleveland five years ago, but, now he’s been voted MVP of Atlanta Braves’ six-game World Series win over over the Houston Astros.
Soler hit .316 with three home runs and six RBIs. He became the first batter to lead off a World Series with a home run, hit a go-ahead, seventh-inning drive in Game 4 and put the Braves ahead in Game 6 with a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the third against Luis Garcia.

As NBA watches non-basketball moves, numbers dip a bit
UNDATED (AP) — There’s a new crackdown in the NBA on non-basketball moves used to draw contact. So far, some of the game’s biggest offensive stars are going to the free-throw line less often. There’s some concern that the changes may be allowing more physicality in general, beyond what was intended — and nobody’s quite certain how the officiating will evolve throughout the season.
Atlanta’s Trae Young averaged 8.7 free-throw attempts per game last season, down to 5.3 so far in 2021-22. It’s a similar story for James Harden, Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal.

Terry’s three-point night gives him the NHL’s longest active and overall point streak with seven goals and five assists during the nine-game span. It is the longest point streak by an Anaheim player since Getzlaf had an 11-game run during the 2015-16 season. Gibson recorded his 23rd career shutout in his 330th appearance. Blackhawks hold settlement talks with former player’s lawyer
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have held settlement talks with the attorney for a former player who has sued the team. Kyle Beach accused an assistant coach of sexual assault in 2010 and the team largely ignored the allegations. An attorney who represents Beach, says the sides met for about an hour and that there may be more talks.

— The Green Bay Packers have released Jaylon Smith less than a month after signing the former Dallas Cowboys linebacker. Smith’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, confirmed Tuesday that the 26-year-old Smith has been released. The Packers left Smith inactive for their 24-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have signed 2012 NFL MVP and four-time All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson to the practice squad to help replace NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry.
This is the sixth NFL team for Peterson, who had been unsigned since finishing last season with Detroit. Tennessee plans to add the 36-year-old Peterson to the active roster with the Titans visiting the Rams on Sunday night.
Henry was scheduled for surgery Tuesday on his injured right foot. The Titans placed him on injured reserve Monday. Tennessee also signed running back D’Onta Foreman and two others to the practice squad.
Elsewhere in the NFL:
— The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent quarterback Josh Love to join their practice squad. The deal is contingent upon Love passing his physical. Quarterback Sam Darnold is in the NFL concussion protocol and his status is unclear for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. P.J. Walker would start if Darnold doesn’t play. Love has never played in an NFL game but threw for 7,206 yards and 43 touchdowns while at San Jose State.
— The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded veteran outside linebacker Melvin Ingram to the Kansas City Chiefs for a sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. Ingram sat out Pittsburgh’s win over Cleveland on Sunday with a groin injury.
— Deshaun Watson’s future destination remains unknown. The NFL trade deadline passed Tuesday with the Houston Texans keeping the embattled quarterback on their roster. Watson has not played this season amid a trade request and 22 lawsuits alleging sexual harassment or assault. He has not been charged.
— The New York Jets hired John Beck to their staff as a full-time assistant. Beck is also the rookie Zach Wilson’s personal quarterback coach. Wilson is sidelined with a sprained knee ligament.
— The New York Jets added some depth to the offensive line, acquiring guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from the Kansas City Chiefs for tight end Daniel Brown ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline. Duvernay-Tardiff is a licensed medical doctor who opted out of last season to work on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19.
— The San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive lineman Charles Omenihu from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick. Omenihu must pass a physical.
— The Los Angeles Rams have released disgruntled receiver DeSean Jackson after just seven games with his hometown team. The Rams spent the past five days trying to find a trade partner for the 14-year NFL veteran. Jackson asked to leave the Rams last week after making just eight catches for 221 yards and a touchdown in his first seven games.
— The Detroit Lions have activated offensive tackle Taylor Decker and defensive end Kevin Strong from injured reserve. The team waived guard Tommy Kraemer.

In world and national news…
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Britain is calling for the world’s financial industry to channel its vast funds toward greener investments to ensure that efforts to curb global warming succeed. Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said Wednesday that while the U.K. government is providing fresh funds to help poor countries cope with climate change, public investment isn’t enough. Speaking at the U.N. climate summit in the Scottish city of Glasgow, Sunak called for a “historic wall of capital” to help countries, companies and cities meet their emissions-reduction goals. Still, poor countries are angry that Britain and other wealthy countries failed to meet their commitment to provide $100 billion a year to finance climate-related projects in the developing world by 2020.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican former business executive Glenn Youngkin has won Virginia’s governor’s race, a major political turnabout in a state that had been trending increasingly blue. The win has alarmed national Democrats already nervous about holding their party’s narrow control of Congress in next year’s midterm elections. The party was also looking at potentially more bad news early Wednesday in New Jersey where incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy was in a tight reelection race. In Virginia, the 54-year-old Youngkin, a political newcomer, beat Democrat Terry McAuliffe, who served as governor from 2014 to 2018. President Joe Biden won Virginia by a comfortable 10 percentage points last year, and New Jersey by 15.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and Republican Jack Ciattarelli were virtually deadlocked early Wednesday after a campaign centered on the incumbent’s progressive policies and handling of the pandemic. The Associated Press has not declared a winner in the race with votes from Tuesday’s election still being tallied. Incomplete returns showed Ciattarelli and the first-term governor separated by about 1,200 votes out of more than 2.3 million cast. A Ciattarelli win would send a jolt through state and national politics, though a win by Murphy for a second consecutive term as a Democrat would break historic trends in the state.
GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization says the number of coronavirus cases has risen in Europe for the fifth consecutive week, making it the only world region where COVID-19 is still increasing. In its weekly report on the pandemic, the U.N. health agency said new cases jumped by 6% in Europe compared to an 18% increase the previous week. According to the report released Wednesday, the weekly number of new infections in other regions either fell or remained about the same. It shows the number of deaths from COVID-19 worldwide rose by 8%. Some scientists worry that waning immunity from vaccinations across Europe could allow even more people to fall ill from COVID-19 during the winter season.
