Larson takes Cup crown
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kyle Larson has closed his comeback season in NASCAR with his first championship, capping his return from a nearly yearlong suspension with a title-winning victory at Phoenix Raceway.
Larson received a flawless final pit stop from his Hendrick Motorsports crew to get the No. 5 Chevrolet back on track ahead of his three title rivals. He controlled a restart with 25 laps remaining, quickly cleared Martin Truex Jr., then held off several of Truex’s challenges.
Larson had a Cup-leading 10 victories this year, success that was in stark contrast to his troubles in 2020. He was fired four races into last season and lost nearly every sponsor for his use of a racial slur while racing online. Hendrick signed him and came away with its 14th NASCAR title.
Truex finished second and was followed by Denny Hamlin, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.
Kyle Larson shared his first career NASCAR Cup championship with the youth racing school that stood by him in his comeback. The Urban Youth Racing School is a Philadelphia-based program that creates opportunities in racing for minorities. Founders Anthony and Michelle Martin and two students attended the championship finale at Phoenix Raceway. The Martins stood their ground and gave Larson a second chance and forged a bond with the driver. They all celebrated together in victory lane after Larson won the championship.

PARIS (AP) — The president of France’s Bishops Conference said the country’s Catholic Church made “a decisive step” after it agreed to provide financial compensation to sex abuse victims. Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, the conference president, said in a speech on Monday that the Church has recognized its “institutional responsibility” and decided to go on “a path of recognition and reparation” that paves the way for victims to possibly receive compensation. The Bishops Conference held its annual meeting a month after a report revealed large-scale child sex abuse within the French Catholic Church. Moulins-Beaufort did not provide details about the amount of the compensation and how the church intends to pay.
(AP) Clearer pictures began to emerge Sunday of some of the eight young people who died when fans at a Travis Scott concert in Houston suddenly surged toward the stage. They ranged from 14 to 27 years old, and included a teenager whose family said she loved to dance and a college student who wanted to join the Border Patrol some day.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is set to hear a case about the government’s ability to get lawsuits thrown out of court by claiming they would reveal secrets that threaten national security. The case before the high court Monday involves a group of Muslim men from Southern California who claim the FBI spied on hundreds in a surveillance operation following Sept. 11. The group claims religious discrimination and violations of other rights, saying they were spied on solely because of their faith. A lower court dismissed almost all their claims after the government said allowing the case to go forward could reveal “state secrets.”
