Valley City (VCSU) The Valley City State football team and its nine seniors ended the 2021 season with an impressive victory Saturday, defeating Dakota State University 33-7 on VCSU Senior Day.
The Vikings led 14-7 at halftime and then broke the game wide open with 19 fourth-quarter points en route to their eighth victory of the season. It is the most wins by a VCSU football team since the 2014 season and gives the Vikings a bit of redemption after an Oct. 16 loss at Dakota State earlier this season.
Valley City State intercepted two passes on Saturday, including an interception that Jerrod Williamson returned for a touchdown and the eighth interception of the season by sophomore linebacker Jahidi West. The interception by West tied VCSU’s single-season school record.
Valley City State ends the season with an 8-2 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. The Vikings will finish second in the NSAA standings. Dakota State drops to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Trojans have one game remaining.

Men’s Basketball
VCSU 88 Dakota Wesleyan 86 (OT)
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (VCSU) – Jalen Addison made the game-winning jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining in overtime Saturday night as the Valley City State men’s basketball team scored an 88-86 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University.
Tied at 86-86 with 4.9 seconds remaining, Addison took an inbounds pass and dribbled down the floor to the left corner before pulling up for a 15-footer to win the game. Addison finished with a team-high 22 points Saturday night, knocking down three 3-pointers and coming up with three steals during the game at the NAIA Basketball Classic in Sioux Falls.
Valley City State improves to 2-2 overall this season. Dakota Wesleyan drops to 2-1, suffering their first loss of the season.
The Vikings trailed by as many as 13 points early in the second half before chipping away at the deficit. Chris Thompson‘s old-fashioned 3-point play with 2:34 remaining finally tied the game at 70-70. Dakota Wesleyan went up 72-70 in the final minute, but VCSU’s Tate Hebrink scored a basket with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game again and eventually force overtime.
Valley City State opened up an 83-76 lead in overtime before Dakota Wesleyan came storming back and eventually tied the game at 86-86 on a basket by Jeffrey Schuch. That set up Addison’s heroics, which delivered VCSU’s second straight victory over Dakota Wesleyan.
Addison led the Vikings with 22 points, while Kevin Schramm shot 6-for-9 and finished with 16 points. Chris Thompson scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Connor Entzi, Eddie Oyet, Tate Hebrink and Uhana Ochan each scored seven points for VCSU.
The Vikings shot 48 percent overall (30-63), 44 percent on 3’s (8-18) and 71 percent at the line (20-28). Dakota Wesleyan shot 58 percent from the field (32-55), 46 percent on 3’s (5-11) and 61 percent on free throws (17-28).
Ace Zorr led Dakota Wesleyan with 25 points, and Koln Oppold had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
VCSU forced 18 turnovers while turning it over just 12 times. Dakota Wesleyan pulled down 34 rebounds while the Vikings had 33 rebounds – including nine offensive boards.

Women’s Basketball
Dakota Wesleyan 67 VCSU 51
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (VCSU)– The Valley City State women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 67-51 to Dakota Wesleyan at the NAIA Basketball Classic.
Dakota Wesleyan opened with eight straight points in Saturday’s game and built a 20-10 advantage after the first ten minutes of play. The Vikings couldn’t find a run as the Tigers expended its lead to 37-23 at the half.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 10-point run to lead 47-23. Back-to-back 3’s from VCSU’s Adriana Torres helped close the gap as the Vikings trailed 51-32 with under a minute left in the third quarter. Valley City State finished the game on a nine-point run but time ran out as Dakota Wesleyan finished with a 67-51 victory Saturday.
Dakota Wesleyan improves to 2-0 on the season and Valley City State falls to 1-1 overall.
Valley City State shot 31 percent from the field (19-61), 33 percent from 3-point range (7-21) and 50 percent on free throws (6-12). Dakota Wesleyan shot 39 percent from the field (27-69), just 8 percent on 3’s (1-12) and 80 percent from the free throw line (12-15). Dakota Wesleyan outrebounded the Vikings 50-36, including 15 on the offensive glass.
Adriana Torres paced the Vikings with 14 points – including three 3-pointers Saturday. Torres added nine rebounds while Hailey Roberts finished with eight points and a pair of assists. Allie Negen totaled eight points and three rebounds off the Viking bench. Taryn Dieterle added a team-best three steals Saturday.
Dakota Wesleyan’s Jada Campbell posted a game-high 18 points Saturday and added six rebounds, four blocks and a steal. Matti Reiner totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Kaylee Kirk contributed eight points and three steals for the Tigers.

Volleyball
ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State volleyball team dropped a five-set effort to Presentation College in the regular season finale Saturday, 12-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-29 and 15-11.
Valley City State finishes the regular season with a 13-17 overall record and an 8-6 NSAA record. VCSU will be the No. 4 seed in the postseason after Saturday’s loss. The Saints finish the regular season with a 15-13 overall record and a 5-9 record in the conference. Presentation clinched a spot in the postseason with Saturday’s victory. The NSAA Tournament will be played Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.
Valley City State handily took the first set Saturday, forcing six Presentation errors early. VCSU took a 7-1 run to pull away and locked in the 25-12 victory on a Sadie Hansen kill.
Presentation then started to heat up and took the next two sets, both 25-22. The Vikings would not give up in the fourth set and held off the Saints on two set point opportunities with kills from Bailey Nelson and Makayla Wetzel. A Brooke Blessum kill set the Vikings up for a set point and a Presentation error gave VCSU the 29-27 victory to stay alive.
In the fifth set, Valley City State held an 8-8 tie with the Saints but couldn’t hold on as Presentation finished with a 7-3 run to take the match.
Valley City State’s Katie Juarez and Sadie Hansen each posted a double-double in Saturday’s effort. Juarez tallied a team-high 29 digs and 10 kills while Hansen added 40 set assists and 21 digs in the match.
Kallene Klever added 21 digs for the Vikings and Bailey Nelson tallied a team-high 19 kills. Ella Roaldson chipped in a pair of solo blocks Saturday.
Presentation’s Kerstin Knopik finished with 10 kills and four solo blocks to lead the Saints. Laura Babcock totaled a game-high 42 digs and Cassidy Keller added 13 digs. Olivia Corey tallied 24 set assists and 12 digs for Presentation.
UP NEXT: VCSU competes as a No. 4 seed in the NSAA Tournament. The two-day tournament is scheduled for Nov. 12-13 in Watertown, S.D.
Sunday
Women’s Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (VCSU)– The Valley City State women’s basketball team had three Vikings score in double figures Sunday as VCSU picked up a 75-64 victory over Mount Marty at the NAIA Basketball Classic.
Adriana Torres scored 17 points in Sunday’s win while Hailey Roberts put up 16 points and Emma Nielsen posted 15 points. Torres, Roberts and Nielsen each made three 3-pointers to combine for nine of VCSU’s 10 3-pointers in the game.
Roberts added five assists, two blocks and two steals to her stat line Sunday while Torres grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Taryn Dieterle contributed nine points and six rebounds, including four offensive boards for VCSU.
Valley City State improves to 2-1 overall this season. Mount Marty drops to 0-3 on the season.
After a back-and-forth first quarter that gave the Vikings a 16-15 advantage, Valley City State started to pull away with a 9-0 run over five minutes in the second quarter. After the five-minute scoring drought for the Lancers, Aubrey Twedt hit a 3-pointer to trail 27-22. The Vikings hit two more 3’s before the break – including a Hailey Roberts 3 at the buzzer – to hold a 37-25 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Vikings kept their momentum coming out of the locker room and held the largest lead of the game at 51-27 on a bucket from Torres with 5:34 on the clock in the third quarter. The Lancers hit four 3’s in the fourth quarter to inch closer but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings held on for a 75-64 victory Sunday.
Valley City State shot 41 percent from the field (22-54), 42 percent on 3-pointers (10-24) and 70 percent from the free throw line (21-30). Mount Marty shot 38 percent from the field (22-58), 39 percent on 3’s (10-26) and 63 percent on free throws (10-16).
The Vikings also held the rebounding advantage Sunday, 41-34. Mount Marty totaled 26 fouls in Sunday’s game to VCSU’s 17.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (VCSU) – Tate Hebrink made the go-ahead free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining Sunday as the Valley City State men’s basketball team won its second straight game in dramatic fashion.
With VCSU and Mount Marty tied at 67-67, Hebrink was fouled on a drive to the basket and sank both of the double bonus free throws, securing a 69-67 Viking victory at the NAIA Basketball Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Valley City State improves to 3-2 overall this season and extends its winning streak to three games. Sunday’s victory followed an overtime victory Saturday against Dakota Wesleyan, during which Jalen Addison made the game-winning shot with 0.4 seconds remaining.
On Sunday, the Vikings led by as many as 11 points early in the second half before the Lancers roared back and took a 51-48 lead with a 14-0 run. The teams stayed tight and traded leads the rest of the game before Hebrink gave the Vikings their final lead with 4.9 seconds to go.
Mount Marty missed its go-ahead shot attempt with 9 seconds left, and Hebrink took the outlet pass and headed quickly up the floor. As he attempted to drive to the hoop, Hebrink was fouled near the 3-point line and proceeded to sink both double bonus free throws with 4.9 seconds left. Mount Marty was unable to get off a good shot attempt in the final seconds.
Hebrink had two assists and scored 10 points off the bench, none bigger than his late free throws. Duoth Gach added 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench, making three 3-pointers. Kevin Schramm led VCSU’s offense with 15 points. Joshua Kelly, Connor Entzi and Uhana Ochan each had six points, and Jalen Addison, Chris Thompson and Eddie Oyet all had five points.
Valley City State overcame a subpar shooting performance in the win. The Vikings shot just 38 percent overall (23-61) and 23 percent from 3-point range (6-26), but were able to help themselves by forcing 19 Mount Marty turnovers.
Mount Marty shot 39 percent overall (24-61) and 23 percent on 3’s (6-26).
