Saturday Sports Results:

Mitchell, SD (UJ) – Trailing 24-0 after three quarters, the University of Jamestown football team faced an uphill battle in Saturday’s game at Dakota Wesleyan Univ.

A Cade Torgerson (JR/Billings, Mont.) nine-yard touchdown pass to Steve Justice (SO/Henderson, Nev.) just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter capped off a 14-play, 75-yard scoring drive and finally got the Jimmies on the board.

The UJ defense forced a three-and-out for the Tigers, and the Jimmies marched 69 yards in seven plays to the end zone, this time Torgerson finding Ryan Collins (SO/Akron, Ohio) from six yards out to make it 24-13 with 11:13 left.

After another three-and-out by the Jimmie defense, the offense took over on the DWU 20-yard line. The Tigers came up with a fumble recovery on the first play of the drive, then one play later Cayden Cunningham tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tate Larson to make it 31-13 with 5:16 left.

Jamestown chewed up 3:52 of clock but went 75 yards to the end zone on the next drive as Torgerson threw his third touchdown of the quarter, a one-yard pass to Javon Bowie-Monteiro (JR/Sacramento, Calif.), and UJ got within 31-19 with 1:20 to play.

An onside kick by Izaak Myles (JR/Apple Valley, Calif.) was recovered by the Jimmies at the Tiger 48-yard line. Four plays later, Torgerson connected with Nick Davis (JR/Plymouth, Minn.) for an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-25 with 54 seconds left.

DWU turned the ball over on downs with 26 seconds remaining and the Jimmies had the ball at their own 38 with no timeouts left. UJ was able to advance to midfield, but Torgerson’s final pass was incomplete as time ran out.

The Jimmies leaned heavily on Torgerson as he set new Jimmie single-game records with 40 completions and 70 pass attempts. Torgerson ended with 366 yards, four touchdowns, and was picked off once.

Micah Madyun (FR/Ramsey, Minn.) tied a single-game record with 11 receptions, while Marcus Giles (JR/Coon Rapids, Minn.) hauled in seven catches. Bowie-Monteiro added six grabs and Justice five.

Jordan Olson (JR/Prior Lake, Minn.) led the defense with 15 total tackles while Ezra Belingheri (FR/Sparks, Nev.) had nine. Belingheri, Russell Ortiz (SO/Silver Springs, Nev.), Damon Heidorf (SO/Bullhead City, Ariz.), and Damian Otero (FR/Winchester, Calif.) all registered half a sack each.

Jamestown, now 2-8 overall and 2-7 in the GPAC, finishes the season next Saturday at home against Dordt (Iowa) University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

GPAC Quarterfinals

Jamestown def Doane  25-20,25-19,25-16

(UJ) The top-ranked University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the GPAC postseason tournament with a sweep of Doane (Neb.) University Saturday night at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown (29-0), the tournament’s number-one seed, will face No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), the fourth seed, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home.

Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.), Corina Huff (SR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.), and Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) provided most of the firepower for the Jimmie offense against the Tigers, combining for 35 of UJ’s 51 kills. Hegerle put 15 balls to the floor and hit .600 without a single error on 25 swings. Huff hit .450 with 11 kills and Holen .364 on nine kills.

The Jimmies outhit Doane .256 to .029 in the opening set, but saw a 16-10 lead gradually shrink down to 19-17. Again leading by two at 21-19, UJ got three of its final four points on kills by Ritter, Aleah Zieske (FR/Spicer, Minn.), and Huff.

The Tigers trailed by one at 11-10 but made two attack errors and allowed three more Hegerle kills to fall behind 16-10. UJ’s lead never fell lower than three, and once again Hegerle put the exclamation point on the set with two closing kills.

Seventeen kills with no errors led to a .486 hitting percentage in the final set for Jamestown. UJ opened with six of the first seven points and never allowed Doane to establish momentum. As the Jimmies had the Tigers on the ropes at 22-13, the visitors won three straight to cut into the lead, but an experienced UJ squad ended the threat and finished out the match.

Jackie Meiklejohn (SR/Dickey, N.D.) passed out 22 assists and Megan Gaffaney (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) 19. Anna Holen and Ellie Holen (SO/LaMoure, N.D.) both had 14 digs and Hannah Schiele (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) 11.

Basketball

Women

MAYVILLE, N.D.  (UJ)  — For the second time in as many meetings this season, it came down to the end for the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team against Mayville State University Saturday night.

The Comets avenged a two-point loss at Jamestown two weeks ago by defeating the Jimmies 66-63 in a non-conference game. It was the first loss of the season for Jamestown, now 3-1, while Mayville State improved to 3-1.

UJ raced out to an 11-2 lead helped out by a pair of three-pointers by Macy Savela (JR/Mountain Iron, MN) and another by Kia Tower (JR/Bigfork, MN). MSU cut into the Jimmie lead by finishing the quarter on a 12-5 run to trail by just a pair going into the second quarter.

Jamestown’s shooting from inside the arc cooled off in the second as they made just five of 13 shots while the Comets countered with five of seven shooting on two-point attempts. UJ’s last lead of the half was 18-16 at the 7:57 mark and the home team started finding their rhythm. Mayville built a seven-point lead with just under two and a half minutes before halftime, but the Jimmies closed the gap to two at the break.

Despite 23 percent shooting in the third, Jamestown was able to build a 40-36 lead with 3:15 left in the quarter. However, Mayville State went on a 10-2 run to build up a four-point lead of their own.

The Comets gradually began to pull away in the fourth, and went ahead 57-50. Tower scored five straight to get UJ within a bucket, but the home team didn’t allow the Jimmies to retake the lead.

Hannah DeMars (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) had 20 points and seven rebounds for Jamestown. Audrey Rodakowski (SO/Dickinson, ND) added 10 while Tower and Savela each had nine. Official stats were unavailable at the time of posting.

Jamestown is back in action next Saturday at College of Saint Mary (Neb.) for a 2 p.m. start.

Box score

COSTA MESA, Calif.  (UJ)  — Mason Walters (JR/Jamestown, ND) turned in his biggest performance of the young season, scoring 37 points and grabbing 19 rebounds as the 19th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team defeated Vanguard University 87-76 Saturday night.

A night after nearly half of the Jimmies’ made field goals came from behind the arc against Hope International University, it was the inside game that helped key the win. UJ had a 46-24 advantage in points in the paint while shooting 23 of 42 (54.8 percent) on two-point attempts.

Walters and Devon Schultz (SR/Arlington, MN) combined for 24 first-half points as Jamestown took a 36-31 lead into the break. The duo made nine of their 14 shots while the rest of the team hit on just three of 16.

The Jimmies continued to work the ball inside in the second half, as just six of their 26 shots attempts were three-pointers. Cole Woodford (SO/Redwood Falls, MN) connected on two of three attempts, while Marc Kjos (JR/Lake City, MN) made one of two, and Walters made his only try.

Woodford had 10 in the second half as Walters stuffed the stat sheet with 22. Brady Birch (SR/Melrose, MN) finished with eight in the half, making all three of his field-goal attempts and sinking a pair of free throws.

Jamestown outrebounded Vanguard 46-25, and the Lions were able to score 21 points off 20 Jimmie turnovers. Vanguard shot just 39.4 percent from the floor and led only once, 14-13 at the 8:43 mark of the first half.

Joining Walters in double figure scoring were Woodford with 13, and Birch and Cordes with 10.

UJ’s next game is 7 p.m. Friday at Valley City State (N.D.)
