VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The Valley City State men’s basketball team shot 64 percent in the second half of Tuesday night’s game to cruise past Yellowstone Christian, 111-68.
Five Vikings scored in double figures and 12 Vikings scored at least a basket in Tuesday’s game. Eddie Oyet went 8-for-10 from the field and scored 21 points to lead the Vikings. Valley City State improves to 4-3 on the season while Yellowstone Christian drops to 0-9.
VCSU never trailed in the game and held a 47-35 lead over the Centurions at halftime. The Vikings pulled away out of the locker room after shooting 64 percent in the second half. VCSU held Yellowstone Christian scoreless over the final five minutes of the game en route to the 111-68 home victory.
Kevin Schramm poured in 17 points for VCSU while Chris Thompson added 16, Duoth Gach posted 13 and Jalen Addison scored 12. Hunter Sand contributed a team-high 10 rebounds and four steals for VCSU.
Thirteen Vikings saw playing time and 12 players scored in Tuesday’s team effort. VCSU scored 62 points off the bench Tuesday, including big performances from Oyet and Gach. Also contributing to VCSU’s bench scoring Tuesday were Uhana Ochan (9), Sand (6), Cayden Rickard (4), Will Tinjum (4), Keaton Kvilvang (3) and Tate Hebrink (2).
VCSU totaled 24 assists as a team Tuesday led by Hebrink who dished out a career-best eight assists. Joshua Kelly added four and Oyet added three.
Valley City State shot 55 percent on field goals (43-78), 38 percent on 3-pointers (11-29) and 78 percent from the free throw line (14-18). Yellowstone Christian shot 42 percent from the field (26-62), 36 percent on 3’s (9-25) and 70 percent on free throws (7-10).
The Vikings scored 36 points off of 22 Centurion turnovers. VCSU also held the rebounding advantage 44-29, including 11 on the offensive glass.
Doug Merida led Yellowstone Christian with 26 points Tuesday while Devin Session added 14 points and Billy Boone scored 12. Boone and Kyle Morris each grabbed eight rebounds for the Centurions and William Thingpen tallied four steals.
UP NEXT: Valley City State travels to the Waldorf Classic this weekend, opening with a game against Clarke University on Friday at 6 p.m. The Vikings then play Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
