Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski says officers were called to Composite America at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday and discovered two gunshot victims. A woman died at the scene and a man was declared dead at a local hospital. KVRR reports that the suspect walked into the police department and turned himself in. The names of the people involved have not been released.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Climbing U.S. oil prices that have motorists paying more at the gas pumps are adding to North Dakota’s bottom line. The state’s oil production was up slightly in September, but prices for North Dakota crude were 32% higher than the state’s tax revenue forecast. New data shows North Dakota produced 1.1 million barrels of oil per day in September, up 0.5% from August. The state’s natural gas production was stronger, up 1.8% from the previous month. U.S. oil prices have climbed in recent months to around $80 a barrel, hitting highs not seen since 2014.
In world and national news…
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — The jury at Kyle Rittenhouse’s murder trial will be allowed to review some of the video in the Kenosha shootings, after requesting it on Day 2 of deliberations Wednesday. The judge also says he’ll “think long and hard” about allowing televised trials in the future. Judge Bruce Schroeder’s comments came while he was addressing the jury’s request. Schroeder took exception to media coverage of some of his decisions. Jurors met for a full day Tuesday with no quick verdict after two weeks of testimony in which they were given starkly different portrayals of his actions the night he shot three men, killing two of them, during an August 2020 night of protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Prosecutors say Rittenhouse provoked the confrontation. His lawyers say he acted in self-defense.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A dispute between the Oklahoma governor and the Pentagon over the COVID-19 vaccine mandate is setting up the first critical test of the military’s authority to require National Guard troops to get the shot. It’s also laying the groundwork for potential protests from other states. Republican Kevin Stitt has asked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to consider suspending the mandate for members of the Oklahoma Guard. As of Wednesday, Austin hadn’t formally responded to Stitt. The Pentagon considers the vaccine critical to maintaining a ready force that can deploy on a moment’s notice to protect the nation, and Guard and Reserve members are part of that force.
SUMAS, Wash. (AP) — People in the small city of Sumas, Washington, are assessing damage from flooding that hit an estimated three quarters of homes in the community near the Canadian border. Parts of Washington state and British Columbia are trying to dry out from an intense, days-long rain storm that cut off key roadways and forced hundreds of evacuations. Skies were sunny Wednesday morning in the area. Sumas’ mayor said officials were looking to go “door-to-door” to check on people and homes. Immediately across the border residents of a low-lying area of Abbotsford, British Columbia, have been warned they face a significant risk to life and must get to avoid rising water levels.
ESTES PARK, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a pilot who crashed while fighting a wildfire near Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The pilot is the second person to die amid wind-driven, late season wildfires in the Rockies this week. The crash happened Tuesday night. Another person died after downed power lines sparked a wildfire near the Wyoming community of Clark on Monday. A tree falling on power lines is believed to have started the fire in Colorado. Fire crews there are hoping to take advantage of cooler temperatures and lighter winds to fight the fire.
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The man who fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery has testified that he feared the 25-year-old Black man was armed with a gun when he encountered Arbery “creeping” outside an unfinished house in his neighborhood 12 days before the shooting. Travis McMichael’s testimony on Wednesday came as defense attorneys in the murder trial for the three white men charged with chasing and killing Arbery opened their case. They argue that their clients were lawfully trying to stop burglaries in their neighborhood in Georgia. McMichael said he first ran into Arbery at the house under construction on Feb. 11, 2020.
