CAMP GRAFTON TRAINING CENTER, N.D. — The North Dakota National Guard’s Land Component Command welcomed a new leader, Saturday after conducting a change of command at the Camp Grafton Training Center, near Devils Lake. Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann, adjutant general for the North Dakota National Guard, presided over the ceremony.
The outgoing commander, Brig. Gen. Leo Ryan, has led over 3,000 N.D. Guard Soldiers of since Sept. 2018. Col. Jonathan Erickson assumed command of the Land Component Command during the ceremony.
Gov. Doug Burgum said, “The citizens of North Dakota are well served by the unwavering dedication of our National Guard Soldiers, thanks in part to outstanding leaders like Brig. Gen. Leo Ryan. Our well-trained Guard Soldiers continually answer the call of duty here at home and across the nation and world. We are deeply grateful to Brig. Gen. Ryan for his service to North Dakota and the nation.”
In honor of his service and achievements over the past three years, Dohrmann awarded Ryan the North Dakota Distinguished Service Medal.
The change of command ceremony is a military tradition which allows Soldiers to view the formal transfer of responsibility from one individual to another. As the orders formally designating the new commander are read aloud, the unit’s colors (flag) are passed from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander.
Dohrmnan said, “I am extremely appreciative of the level of service and dedication to duty exhibited by Brig. Gen. Ryan during his 36 years to the N.D. National Guard. His commitment to taking care of Soldiers and ensuring they were properly trained and ready to respond when called ensured our mission success. We wish him well in his well-deserved retirement.”
A native of Jamestown, N.D., Ryan enlisted in 1985 as a bridge crewman in the 957th Engineer Company. In 1992, he completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After Ryan thanked the audience, Erickson addressed the Soldiers in attendance, saying, “I appreciate the faith and confidence placed in me by the adjutant general who selected me for this command,” said Erickson. “I will work hard every day ensuring my best efforts and commitment to all of the National Guard Soldiers of this command. It’s quality Soldiers like you that make our organization one of the best National Guard units in the nation and I am proud to serve with you.”
Erickson brings nearly three decades of experience to his new assignment. In 1994, he was commissioned as a Military Intelligence officer through the ROTC program at the University of North Dakota. BISMARCK,N.D. (AP) — A judge has ordered Glasser Images to preserve its websites as the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office investigates the abrupt closure of the Bismarck photography studio last month. The business also is facing a possible eviction from its downtown location for owing $25,000 in rent and late fees. Glasser Images photographed weddings throughout the Dakotas, Minnesota and Colorado. Owner Jack Glasser has said the studio could not remain financially viable, due in large part to the coronavirus pandemic. The photo studio announced it would be unable to refund clients when it closed. The attorney general’s office is investigating to determine if fraud occurred.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota has agreed to take a controversial equestrian statue of the 26th president that has stood on the steps of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City since 1940. The bronze statue was commissioned by the New York State Roosevelt Memorial in 1929. The library, which opens next year in Medora, North Dakota, will be getting it as a long-term loan. The statue depicts the former president on horseback with a Native American man and an African man flanking the horse. It’s been the subject of years of criticism that it symbolizes colonial subjugation and racial discrimination.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal appeals court has largely upheld a North Dakota law aimed at regulating companies that are hired to hold down prescription costs for insurers and employers. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Wednesday, reversing its earlier decision on the state law that provides oversight of pharmacy benefit managers. The law bars such things as gag rules that limit what pharmacists can discuss with their patients. The city did not release any additional information about those who died. Police have said a “person of interest” is in custody but have not provided details about the person or any possible motive. The 18-year-old tells Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview set to air Monday night that the “case has nothing to do with race. It never had anything to do with race. It had to do with the right to self-defense.” Rittenhouse is white, as were the men he shot.
