Valley City  (CSi)  The Barnes County Sheriff’s Office has released the number of open burglary and theft cases now under investigation.

The News Release States:

“The Barnes County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Citizens of Barnes County for information we have received regarding the recent Burglaries/Thefts that have been occurring locally.

From January 1, 2021 to November 22, 2021 of the 4,890 Calls for Service our office has received, 22 of those calls are related to Burglary/Breaking and Entering and 41 of them are Theft related calls.

For the year of 2020 during those dates, of the 3,243 Calls for Service our office had received, 17 of those were Burglary/Breaking and Entering and 46 were Theft related calls.

Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin says sometimes it’s hard to solve Burglaries/Breaking and Entering calls because a majority of them take place on abandoned properties that sometimes aren’t checked for long periods of time.  Theft calls can be equally as challenging to solve because of the same reasons and items can range in value worth as little as ten dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Sometimes property owners let us know about them but don’t necessarily ask us to investigate them.

Sheriff McClaflin added that these numbers are in line with past years numbers however total Calls for Service numbers are on a rise.  He would like the Citizens to know we take every one of these calls seriously and do our best to solve them.  Sheriff McClaflin would also like to remind Citizens to continue to be aware of their surroundings and call our office if you notice something suspicious in your area.”

DALLAS (AP) — Millions of Americans are loading up their cars or piling onto planes, determined to reclaim Thanksgiving traditions that were put on pause last year by the pandemic. The number of air travelers this week is expected to approach or even exceed pre-pandemic levels. Auto club AAA predicts that 48.3 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday period, an increase of nearly 4 million over last year despite sharply higher gasoline prices. Many feel emboldened by the fact that nearly 200 million Americans are now fully vaccinated. But it also means brushing aside concerns about a resurgent virus at a time when the U.S. is now averaging nearly 100,000 new infections a day.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden plans to require essential nonresident travelers crossing U.S. land borders, such as truck drivers and emergency response officials, to be fully vaccinated beginning on Jan. 22. A senior administration official said the requirement brings the rules for essential travelers in line with those that took effect earlier this month for leisure travelers, when the U.S. reopened its borders to fully vaccinated individuals. Essential travelers entering by ferry will also be required to be fully vaccinated by the same date. The official spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to preview the announcement.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Jury deliberations are set to continue for a second day in the trial of three white man charged with the killing of Ahmaud Arbery in coastal Georgia. The mostly white jury spent about six hours deliberating Tuesday before adjourning without a verdict. They are to resume Wednesday morning, weighing murder charges against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan. The McMichaels said they suspected Arbery was a burglar when they chased him past their home in February 2020. Bryan joined the chase and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael killing Arbery with a shotgun. Travis McMichael testified he fired in self defense.

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization says coronavirus cases jumped by 11% in Europe in the last week, the only region in the world where COVID-19 has continued to increase since mid-October. In its weekly assessment of the pandemic released on Tuesday, the U.N. health agency said cases and deaths globally have risen by about 6%, with about 3.6 million new infections and 51,00 new deaths reported in the previous week. Earlier this week, WHO’s Europe director Dr. Hans Kluge warned that without urgent measures taken soon, the continent could see another 700,000 deaths by the spring.

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has tested negative for COVID-19 after his French counterpart, whom he met early in the week, became infected with the coronavirus. De Croo’s office said Wednesday that he will do an important part of his work remotely in line with restrictive measures that the government as a whole took last week. He will have a second test early next week. De Croo met with French Prime Minister Jean Castex for security talks on Monday. That same day, Castex’s daughters tested positive after her father returned from the meeting with De Croo. Castex himself then took two tests that were both positive.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NASA has launched a spacecraft on a mission to smash into an asteroid and test whether it would be possible to knock a speeding space rock off course if one were to threaten Earth. The spacecraft is called DART, for Double Asteroid Redirection Test. It lifted off from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. If all goes well, in September 2022 it will slam head-on into Dimorphos, an asteroid 525 feet (160 meters) across, at 15,000 mph (24,139 kph). The asteroid is no danger to Earth, just a good target for testing out the potentially planet-saving technology.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have finally driven President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion package of family services, health care and climate initiatives through the House. Now the focus turns to the Senate, where painful Republican amendments, restrictive rules and moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin lurk. It took Democrats six months, but they finally settled their internal disputes and moved compromise legislation through the House on Nov. 19. They’re now negotiating further changes for a final version that they hope by Christmas would win approval in the 50-50 Senate, where the Democrats will need all of their votes. House passage of the altered bill would also be needed.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares are falling as worries about inflation set off expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve might accelerate its plans to raise interest rates. Benchmarks in Japan, Australia, South Korea and China slipped in early trading. The Fed will release minutes later in the day from its October interest-rate meeting, potentially giving investors more details on plans to start trimming bond purchases that have helped keep interest rates low. Wall Street closed mixed. President Joe Biden ordered 50 million barrels of oil released from the nation’s strategic reserve to help bring down energy costs. The move was made in concert with other big oil-consuming nations. Oil prices were mixed by midday Wednesday in Asia.
