BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota wants to extend the state’s abandoned well plugging program by tapping into $4 billion made available in the federal infrastructure bill for the purpose of cleaning up old oil and gas sites across the nation. Funding could potentially come North Dakota’s way each year over the next decade to continue the work the Oil and Gas Division started in 2020 to clean up hundreds of wells. State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says the additional funds available through the infrastructure bill President Joe Biden signed into law earlier this month could help North Dakota address the unfinished work.

TORONTO (AP) — Canada says it’s banning the entry of foreign nationals who have traveled through southern Africa in the last 14 days. That’s due to discovery of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus that has stoked worldwide fears. Government ministers also said Friday that all Canadians who have traveled to southern Africa in the last 14 days will be tested on arrival and must quarantine until they get a negative test result. Those who have arrived in the last 14 days are also asked to quarantine and get a COVID-19 test. Officials say there’s no indication of any cases in Canada.

— A toe injury didn’t seem to bother Aaron Rodgers as he threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the Packers’ 36-28 victory over the visiting Rams. Rodgers went 28 of 45 for 307 yards as the 9-3 Packers bounced back from a 34-31 loss at Minnesota. Matthew Stafford went 21 of 38 for 302 yards with three touchdown passes, but the 7-4 Rams dropped their third in a row.

— Leonard Fournette’s fourth touchdown of the afternoon was a 28-yard burst with 20 seconds left to send the Bucs past the Colts, 38-31. Tom Brady led the 8-3 Bucs on the eight-play, 75-yard tiebreaking drive after getting the ball back with 3:29 to go. Fournette rushed 17 times for 100 yards and three scores while also catching Brady’s only touchdown pass.

— Rookie Patrick Surtain II picked off Justin Herbert twice, returning the second 70 yards for a touchdown that sparked the Broncos’ 28-7 win over the Chargers. The Broncos finished with 147 yards rushing against the league’s leakiest run defense.

— Lamar Jackson’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews in the third quarter was enough to lift the Ravens to a 16-10 victory over the Browns. Jackson scrambled all the way back to about the 35-yard line before lofting a pass over the middle to a remarkably open Andrews in the end zone. Jackson’s four interceptions didn’t stop Baltimore from improving to 8-3.

UNDATED (AP) — The New England Patriots have turned their 2-4 start into a very distant memory.

The Pats lead the AFC East at 8-4 following their sixth consecutive win, a 36-13 rout of the Titans. Rookie Mac Jones had two touchdown passes and New England’s defense forced four turnovers. Jones completed 23 of 32 passes for 310 yards.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEWS

Riley leaving Sooners for Trojans

UNDATED (AP) — Lincoln Riley is leaving one great college football tradition for another.

Southern California has lured Riley away from Oklahoma in a stunning move that suddenly puts the Sooners’ situation in limbo.

Riley went 55-10 in five seasons leading the Sooners, winning four Big 12 titles and making three College Football Playoff appearances in his first head coaching job. The 38-year-old Texan is widely considered one of the top offensive minds in the college game.

The Trojans say Riley will immediately transition to USC, although interim coach Donte Williams will lead the team in its season finale at California on Saturday night.

USC fired Clay Helton in September of his seventh season in charge.

In other college football news:

— David Cutcliffe won’t return for a 15th season as Duke’s football coach. The school has announced a “mutual agreement for separation” following the Blue Devils’ winless Atlantic Coast Conference record. Duke just closed a three-win season with a 47-10 home loss to Miami.

— A person familiar with the search says Louisiana-Lafayette’s Billy Napier will be Florida’s next football coach, ending a quick process that landed the Gators their top target. Napier is expected to remain with the Ragin Cajuns this week as they prepare to host Appalachian (ap-ah-LA’-chihn) State in the Sun Belt Conference championship game Saturday. Napier will then take over for Dan Mullen, who was fired last week after the team’s fourth loss in five games.

Montreal has a 6-15-2 record this season and is ahead of only the Islanders and Senators in the Eastern Conference standings.

— The Sharks have placed forward Evander Kane on waivers and plan to send him to the AHL if he isn’t claimed by another team. Kane was eligible to return to play Tuesday against New Jersey after serving a 21-game suspension for submitting a fake COVID-19 vaccination card.

In world and national news…

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization is pushing for an international accord to help prevent and fight future pandemics amid the emergence of a worrying new omicron COVID-19 variant. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said Monday that many uncertainties remain about just how transmissible and severe infection by the highly mutated omicron might be. Tedros joined leaders like outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera for a long-planned and largely virtual special session of the U.N. health agency’s member states at the World Health Assembly. The gathering is aimed at devising a global action plan toward preventing, preparing and responding to future pandemics.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portuguese health authorities on Monday identified 13 cases of omicron, the new coronavirus variant spreading fast globally, among members of a top soccer club, and were investigating possible local transmission of the virus outside of southern Africa. The Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute said that one of those who tested positive was a player from the Lisbon-based Belenenses SAD soccer club who had recently traveled to South Africa, where the omicron variant was first identified. The others, however, had not traveled there, indicating that this may be one of the very first cases of local transmission of the virus outside of southern Africa.

BEIJING (AP) — European stocks have rebounded while Asian markets fell further after the coronavirus’s omicron variant was found in more countries and governments imposed travel controls. Market benchmarks in London and Frankfurt gained 0.8% at the opening. Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong declined, though losses were smaller than Friday’s fall after reports the variant first spotted in South Africa appeared to spread around the globe. Wall Street futures were higher. In energy markets, benchmark U.S. crude surged $3.50 to $71.65 per barrel in New York, rebounding from Friday’s $10.24 plunge. Brent crude jumped $3.37 to $74.96 per barrel in London.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — From appliance stores in the United States to food markets in Hungary and gas stations in Poland, rising consumer prices fueled by high energy costs and supply chain disruptions are putting a pinch on households and businesses worldwide. As economies recover from lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, increased consumer demand has helped lead to rising inflation. Countries in central and Eastern Europe, like Poland and Hungary, are among those feeling the rise in prices most acutely. Their weakening currencies and import-oriented economies make them particularly vulnerable to price hikes, and inflation rates there are among the highest in Europe.

CHICAGO (AP) — The trial of actor Jussie Smollett will boil down to the question of whether the jury believes the actor’s version of what he says was a racist and homophobic attack or that told by two brothers who say they helped the actor fake the attack. Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo admit they took part in the “attack” that made headlines around the world but say Smollett planned the whole thing and paid them to do it. In a way, the brothers will be on trial as much as Smollett, with pretty much the whole prosecution case hinging on whether jurors believe them. The trial starts with jury selection Monday and is expected to last a week.
