BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of people who have died in November after contracting the coronavirus is a sharp contrast to the same month last year. The North Dakota Department of Health said Monday 85 people have died so far in November as a result of COVID-19, compared to 500 people who succumbed to virus complications in November 2020. The number of active cases peaked on Nov. 13, 2020 when 10,432 people were positive for the coronavirus. A total of 1,877 people have died of COVID-19 so far in North Dakota. Health officials confirmed 152 new coronavirus cases in North Dakota during testing Nov. 28, down 103 cases from the previous day.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge has blocked President Joe Biden’s administration from enforcing a coronavirus vaccine mandate on health care workers in 10 states that had brought the first legal challenge against the requirement. The preliminary injunction issued Monday applies to Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. Those states all have either a Republican attorney general or governor. A federal judge in Missouri said the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid had no clear authority from Congress to enact the vaccine mandate for health care providers that participate in the two government programs. The rule requires workers to receive their first dose by Dec. 6 and their second by Jan. 4.

Valley City 11/28/2021 Mayor Carlsrud’s  Message

“Greetings Everybody,

Last Thursday was Thanksgiving and I hope you all were as Blessed as we were. Two of our sons, a grandson and a couple friends were at our house for the afternoon. Though the temperature outside was cool, it was warm in the house and after dinner, sitting and visiting seemed to be the order of the day. Of course Sue was a grand host.

We have had a good number of positive comments about the beautiful holiday lighting on Central, Main, Veteran’s Park and 8th Avenue South by the Wellness Center. While many of the decorations are new, many of our older ones have been “reconditioned” with LED lights by our Electrical Dept and they look new. Thanks to all the Valley City employees from Public Works and Government for “putting it all together”. We citizens of Valley City have a great city staff working for us. Say “Thank you” to a city employee when you see her or him.

“Courtesy is contagious,

The “Parade of Lights” will be held Thursday evening beginning at 6 PM. The forecast is nice, so come out, enjoy the parade and fellowship. A number of stores plan to be open, stop in and say “Hi”.

We have more COVID cases per 10K than Cass County. Vaccinations protect you, your family, your friends and they are free!!

Thank you to contributors again this week.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A former University of North Dakota student is accused of stealing more than $330,000 in federal coronavirus relief money. Enroy Duncan allegedly devised a scheme to defraud the government by filing a false application for Paycheck Protection Program funds. He is charged with wire fraud. Court documents show that Duncan falsely stated that his company, called “Homeinhome Senior Care” had 17 employees and paid more than $1.6 million in wages, tips, and compensation. The indictment says Duncan’s Grand Forks apartment was listed as the company’s address, but no records of the business could be found at the North Dakota Secretary of State’s office or Job Service. KVRR-TV reports that Duncan is currently living in Florida, where he made his first court appearance on Nov. 18.

UJ Women’s Basketball

Jamestown 97 Presentation College 37

Jamestown  (UJ) The offense was firing on all cylinders for the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team Monday night at Harold Newman Arena.

The Jimmies outscored Presentation (S.D.) College 79-27 over the final three quarters in a 97-37 non-conference victory.

UJ went ahead 18-10 after the first, but turned that single-digit lead into at 27-point advantage going into halftime. Jamestown shot 11-for-24 in the second while holding PC to 4-of-12 shooting and outrebounded the Saints 16-6.

A red-hot fourth quarter helped push UJ towards triple digits on the scoreboard. COLLEGE FOOTBALL-COACHES

Kelly leaving Irish for Tigers

UNDATED (AP) — For the second straight day a big-name college football coach is switching schools.

LSU is hiring Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame, a stunning move by one of the most accomplished coaches in college football. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press of the decision, which was first reported by Yahoo! Sports. It comes a little more than 24 hours after Southern California lured Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma.

The 60-year Kelly became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history earlier this season, surpassing Knute Rockne. In 12 seasons with the Fighting Irish, Kelly is 113-40, including the current run of five straight double-digit victory seasons.

Notre Dame just completed an 11-1 season on Saturday and still is in contention to reach the College Football Playoff for the third time in the last four years.

Kelly would replace Ed Orgeron (OHR’-juh-rahn), who was told in October he wouldn’t be back after leading LSU to a 2019 national championship.

Elsewhere on college football sidelines:

— Rhett Lashlee is the new head coach at SMU after two years as Miami’s offensive coordinator. He had the same role on Sonny Dykes’ staff with the Mustangs in 2018 and 2019. Dykes left after four seasons at SMU and is expected to be introduced as TCU’s new coach on Tuesday to replace Gary Patterson.

— Temple has fired football coach Rod Carey after three lackluster seasons. The Owls completed a 3-9 season on Saturday and were 12-20 under Carey.

— Washington has hired Fresno State’s Kalen DeBoer to lead the Huskies, handing a program that has struggled offensively to a coach with a track record of productive and creative offenses. The Bulldogs went 9-3 this season, including a victory against UCLA.

Baylor QB Bohanon uncertain for Big 12 title game

UNDATED (AP) — Ninth-ranked Baylor still isn’t sure if quarterback Gerry Bohanon will be ready to play in this weekend’s Big 12 championship game against fifth-ranked Oklahoma State. Bohanan has missed the past 1 1/2 games because of a right hamstring injury.

If Bohanon isn’t able to play, Blake Shapen (SHAY’-pehn) would get his second start. Aranda says the Bears have to make sure that Bohanon is able to move around to stay safe and avoid unnecessary hits.

In other college football news:

— Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler announced on social media that he will enter the transfer portal. The decision comes on the heels of coach Lincoln Riley’s decision to leave for USC. Rattler entered this season as a first-team preseason All-American and the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He was benched after a slow start against Texas.

In world and national news…

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s medical agency chief said Tuesday that it is ready to deal with the new omicron variant, and that it will take two weeks to have an indication whether the current COVID-19 vaccines will be able to deal with it. Emer Cooke, the Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency, said that if it does require a new vaccine to counter omicron, it would take up to four months to have it approved for use in the 27-nation bloc. Cooke sounded more reassuring than the World Health Organization, which warned Monday that the global risk from the omicron variant is “very high,” saying the mutated coronavirus could lead to surges with “severe consequences.”

BRUSSELS (AP) — Dutch health authorities say the omicron variant was already in the Netherlands when South Africa alerted the World Health Organization about it last week. Tuesday’s announcement is adding to fear and confusion over the new version of the coronavirus in a weary world hoping it had left the worst of the pandemic behind. The Netherlands’ RIVM health institute found omicron in samples dating from Nov. 19 and 23. The WHO said South Africa first reported the the variant to the U.N. healthy agency on Nov. 24. It remains unclear where or when the variant first emerged — but that hasn’t stopped wary nations from rushing to impose travel restrictions. Much is still not known about the variant — though early evidence suggests it could be more contagious.

TOKYO (AP) — World markets and U.S. futures have fallen as investors cautiously weigh how much damage the new omicron coronavirus variant may unleash on the global economy. Shares fell in Frankfurt, London and Paris after sinking in most Asian markets. Sydney and Shanghai were marginally higher. Analysts say a serious economic downturn likely can be averted because many people have been vaccinated, but a return to pre-pandemic levels of economic activity, especially in tourism, has been dramatically delayed. It remains unclear how effective existing vaccines might be against the omicron variant. Markets have a few mileposts this week that could swing prices, chief among them Friday’s U.S. jobs report.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers will try to persuade a federal appeals court to stop Congress from receiving call logs, drafts of speeches and other documents related to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol led by his supporters. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit also will hear arguments Tuesday from lawyers for the House committee investigating the riot and seeking the records. Democratic presidents nominated all three judges who will hear arguments. Trump’s attorneys want the court to reverse a federal judge’s ruling allowing the National Archives and Records Administration to turn over the records.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say the bodies of four people were found at a home in northeastern Indiana following a report of shots being fired. Allen County sheriff’s Cpl. Adam Griffith says law enforcement responded about 9 p.m. Monday and medics confirmed that the four were dead inside the home, near Fort Wayne. Griffith says one person described as a witness was uninjured at the home and investigators interviewed that person. The investigation in Allen County was in the preliminary stages Monday night, but authorities didn’t believe there was any current danger to the public. Circumstances of the deaths weren’t immediately given.

CHICAGO (AP) — Testimony is set to begin in the trial of ex-“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett. Prosecutors said at Smollett’s trial in Chicago on Monday that he staged a homophobic and racist attack in January 2019. But his defense attorney says Smollett is “a real victim” of a “real crime.” Defense attorney Nenye Uche told jurors that two brothers attacked Smollett because they didn’t like him. He also suggested a third person was involved in the attack. Prosecutor Dan Webb says Smollett and the brothers faked the attack after a television studio didn’t take hate mail he received seriously. Webb says testimony will start Tuesday with a Chicago police officer taking the witness stand.
