Kia Tower (JR/Bigfork, MN) scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to help lead the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team to a 79-74 win over Hastings (Neb.) College Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

It was the fourth straight win for the Jimmies (8-4 overall, 3-3 GPAC), who will play at Mount Marty (S.D.) University next Saturday.

Jamestown led 35-32 at the half, but a 14-6 run by the Broncos put the visitors ahead 46-41 with 5:10 left in the third quarter. Megan Oswald (FR/Brownsdale, MN) brought the Jimmies level after a three-point play at the 2:56 mark. Sarah Lenz (FR/Belle Plaine, MN) put Jamestown back in front with a pair of free throws on UJ’s next possession. A 14-4 run capped off by a Tower three-pointer with a second left, made it 61-51 going into the fourth.

Allison Bauer’s basket wtih 4:03 to play brought Hastings within two points at 69-67, but Noelle Josephson (SR/Ramsey, MN) and Tower scored on back-to-back possessions to build a six-point UJ advantage.

The Jimmies narrowly outshot Hastings .441 to .439, and both teams shot 16-of-19 from the foul line. Rebounds were even at 35, and UJ committed one fewer turnover (24-23).

Tower made six of her 11 three-point attempts and recorded three steals. Josephson (14) and Hannah DeMars (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) (12) were also in double figures. DeMars had a team-high seven rebounds. Lenz and Megan Oswald each had eight points off the bench, and Jordynn Toliver (JR/Box Elder, SD) dished out four assists.

John Argue (SO/Houston, TX) scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lead the tenth-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team to a 91-88 win over Hastings (Neb.) College Saturday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

Argue, filling in for an injured Mason Walters (JR/Jamestown, ND), erupted for 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting in the second half. He made all three of his three-point attempts and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final twenty minutes. His 36 points ties for the seventh-most by a Jimmie in a single game.

Hastings twice led by four points in a back-and-forth first half, and the Jimmies would take its largest lead at 37-31 following a Devon Schultz (SR/Arlington, MN) free throw at the 2:50 mark. The Broncos would tie the game again at 41 before Argue converted a three-point play just before halftime to give UJ a 44-41 lead at the break.

The Broncos took leads of 48-47 and 50-49 in the second half after baskets by Dashawn Walker, but the Jimmies would retake the lead after an Argue basket on the next trip down the floor. Will Cordes (SO/Shakopee, MN) knocked down a three-pointer and hit a jumper to make it a six-point lead, and Argue followed with another basket for a 58-50 edge.

Hastings got as close as 69-64 just under ten minutes to play, but eight straight points from Argue turned the lead into 13, and it looked like the Jimmies were in control. However, the Broncos put together a 14-3 run capped off by a TJ Babikir three-pointer that made it 86-85 UJ with 67 seconds left.

Cordes and Phil Cisrow traded three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor, but free throws by Cordes and Devan Praska (SR/Thompson, ND) helped close out the game. Walker’s three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good, and Jamestown came away with the win.

Cordes finished with 20 points and made five three-pointers. Brady Birch (SR/Melrose, MN) had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Marc Kjos (JR/Lake City, MN) was also in double figures with 10. Cole Woodford (SO/Redwood Falls, MN) had seven assists to go along with seven rebounds.

A bad pass heading out of bounds was saved by Adriana Torres as she knocked the ball off a Dickinson State player to retain possession with 0.7 seconds to go. Allie Critchley then found a double-teamed Dieterle who sank the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.

“This was a great team win for us tonight. I could not be more proud of our grit down the stretch.” said head coach Vanessa Johnson. “We had so many players step up in big moments and really put our team above themselves.”

Valley City State improves to 4-6 overall and opens conference play with a 1-0 record. Dickinson State falls to 0-11 overall and 0-1 in the NSAA.

DICKINSON  (VCSU)  – Valley City State’s bench scored 60 of the team’s 84 points Saturday night as the Viking men’s basketball team used its depth in a road victory at Dickinson State University.

Duoth Gach headlined the bench effort with a season-high 27 points, helping the Vikings to an 84-79 win in their North Star Athletic Association conference opener.

Valley City State improves to 8-4 overall this season and is now 1-0 in conference play. Dickinson State drops to 0-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

“Our depth showed tonight,” said VCSU head coach Ryan Montgomery. “Dickinson State is better than their record shows and they gave it their all. Our bench responded and helped us get the conference win on the road, which is really tough to do. We will enjoy this tonight and get back to work on Monday.”

Valley City State – the preseason favorite to win the NSAA conference title – built a 43-33 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half. The Blue Hawks tied the game twice after halftime and cut the lead to one point on three other occasions, but the Vikings always had the answer. A basket by Dickinson’s Bryce Knox cut VCSU’s lead to 80-79 in the final minute, but Joshua Kelly went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 24 seconds to clinch the victory.

After the Vikings fell behind 10-2 early in the game, Gach came off the bench to spark a huge Viking rally. Gach scored 16 points over the next four minutes, igniting a 27-8 Viking run that turned the 10-2 deficit into a 29-18 lead.

The Vikings finished the game shooting just 37 percent overall (26-71) but shot 38 percent from 3-point range (11-29) and went 21-for-24 on free throws.

Gach made five 3’s and shot 10-for-16 overall as he led the Vikings with 27 points. Uhana Ochan also had a big game off the bench, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Eddie Oyet posted 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists off the bench, and Tate Hebrink added six points and five assists as part of VCSU’s 60 bench points. In world and national news…

BEIJING (AP) — China is threatening to take “firm countermeasures” if the U.S. proceeds with a diplomatic boycott of February’s Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Monday accused U.S. politicians of grandstanding over the issue of not sending dignitaries to attend the events that China hopes will showcase its economic development. Speaking to reporters at a daily briefing, Zhao said such a move would be an “outright political provocation,” but gave no details on how China would retaliate. U.S. President Joe Biden has said he is considering the boycott, under which American athletes would still compete, and an announcement is expected this week. Supporters of a boycott cite China’s poor record on human rights.

SUMBERWULUH, Indonesia (AP) — Rescuers dug out the body of a 13-year-old boy with their bare hands on Monday, as improved weather conditions allowed them to resume their search after a volcano on Indonesia’s Java island erupted with fury, killing at least 15 people with searing gas and ash and leaving 27 others missing. Mount Semeru spewed thick columns of ash in a sudden eruption Saturday triggered by heavy rain. Villages and nearby towns were blanketed by tons of volcanic debris. Searing gas raced down the sides of the mountain, smothering entire villages and killing or seriously burning those caught in its path. Disaster officials say 56 people were hospitalized, mostly with burns.
