A cold front will move through western and central North Dakota
overnight Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, bringing colder air
into the state. After the cold air arrives, a band of snow is
expected to move into western North Dakota Wednesday morning,
central North Dakota in the early afternoon, and the Turtle
Mountains and James River Valley by late Wednesday afternoon.
Strong northwest winds will accompany the snow and produce areas
of blowing snow, and reduced visibilities as it moves across the
state. Any one area will probably not see more than a few hours of
strong winds and moderate snow at the same time, but the
combination of snow and blowing snow will produce areas of reduced
visibility, and with temperatures dropping, icy roads will linger
after the snow ends. Snowfall is expected to be mainly an inch or
two for most areas, with a few areas possibly seeing up to three
inches.
In Southeast North Dakota, there is a 20 to 40% chance for near blizzard or blizzard conditions to develop late Wednesday evening into the overnight hours. Most areas are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow during this event with the highest impacts expected from 6pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday morning.
If you have travel plans Wednesday through Wednesday night, be sure
to check the latest forecast and travel conditions before
venturing out. Very cold temperatures will linger over the state
into the weekend.
Beyond the potential for precipitation Wednesday into Wednesday
night, arctic high pressure will nudge down into the area from
Canada. This will result in much colder, and below average,
temperatures for the latter half of this week and through the
weekend.

Kristi Noem’s administration departed from established practice and gave an extra opportunity to the governor’s daughter to get her real estate appraiser license. Sherry Bren’s testimony before a joint legislative panel examining the state’s appraiser certification program is the first time that Bren has spoken in depth in public about a meeting in the governor’s mansion last year since The Associated Press first reported on it in September. The meeting occurred in July 2020, a week after the agency notified Peters that her application did not meet federal requirements and was headed for denial.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A police official says the suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright with her handgun when she said she meant to use her Taser had been fully trained in their department’s policies on the proper use of force, including stun guns. Brooklyn Center Police Commander Garett Flesland testified Tuesday that Kim Potter, who resigned two days after she shot Wright, should have been familiar with the policies even as they evolved during her 26-year career and that she repeatedly signed documents acknowledging the rules. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is debating recommending criminal contempt charges against former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The action would rebuke Meadows for saying he would no longer cooperate with the panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. That panel voted 9-0 Monday night to recommend the contempt charges. A House vote to hold him in contempt would refer the issue to the Justice Department, which would decide whether to prosecute the former Republican congressman. It would be the first time the House has voted to hold a former member in contempt since the 1830s, according to House records.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia has filed a civil lawsuit seeking harsh financial penalties against far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers over their role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The suit also names dozens of the groups’ senior members, many of whom already face criminal charges for taking part in the violent attack. Karl Racine, Washington’s attorney general, says the suit seeks compensation for damages to the city and intends to inflict maximum financial damage on the groups responsible. The suit was filed Tuesday in federal court.
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — The father of a Michigan boy charged with fatally shooting four students at Oxford High School mouthed “I love you” to his wife as the couple appeared in court to face involuntary manslaughter charges. James and Jennifer Crumbley are accused of giving 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley access to a gun and failing to intervene when they were confronted with his disturbing drawings a few hours before the the Nov. 30 shooting. A judge granted a request by prosecutors and defense lawyers to postpone until Feb. 8 a key hearing that will determine whether the elder Crumbleys will face a trial.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo was ordered by New York’s ethics commission Tuesday to give up the millions he was paid to write a book about his response to the pandemic. An attorney for Cuomo immediately called the action unconstitutional and promised a fight. Cuomo was directed to turn over proceeds earned from “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic” within 30 days under a resolution approved 12-1 by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics. The order came a month after the commission voted to rescind approval of Cuomo’s $5.1 million book deal. Cuomo resigned in August amid findings he sexually harassed 11 women.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The omicron variant is offering more hints about what it may have in store as it spreads around the globe: A highly transmissible virus that may cause less severe disease, and one that can be slowed — but not stopped — by today’s vaccines. An analysis Tuesday of data from South Africa suggests the Pfizer vaccine offers less defense against infection from omicron and reduced, but still good, protection from hospitalization. The findings are preliminary and have not been peer-reviewed, but they line up with other early data about omicron’s behavior, including that it seems to be more easily spread from person to person.
CAP-HAITIEN, Haiti (AP) — At least 60 people were killed and dozens more injured after a gasoline tanker overturned and exploded in northern Haiti. The blast occurred shortly after midnight in the coastal city of Cap-Haitien. Early reports indicate that the tanker was trying to avoid an oncoming motorcycle when it flipped. Onlookers then rushed to the scene with buckets to scoop up the tanker’s valuable cargo as it spilled toward a nearby pile of simmering trash. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says the nation owes the families of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School nine years ago “more than our prayers. We owe them action.” In a video released Tuesday, Biden said that “no matter how long it’s been, every one of those families relives the news they got that day.” The president said everything changed that day, and the “the nation was shocked.” A gunman killed 20 first-grade students and six educators inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012. A senior White House official says Biden shares frustrations expressed by many gun violence prevention groups that Congress is acting too slowly to implement new gun legislation.

A Nevada State Police spokeswoman said Tuesday the 74-year-old former football hero and actor, acquitted California murder defendant and convicted Las Vegas armed robber was granted good behavior credits and discharged from parole effective Dec. 1. Simpson’s lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, says his client declined an immediate interview. LaVergne also declined to talk about Simpson’s future, including whether he intends to remain in Nevada.
