BRUSSELS (AP) — The head of the European Union’s executive branch says omicron is expected to be the dominant coronavirus variant in the 27-nation bloc by mid-January. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU is well prepared to fight omicron with 66.6% of the bloc’s population fully vaccinated. Von der Leyen expressed disappointment on Wednesday that the pandemic will again disrupt year-end celebrations but said she was confident the EU has the “strength” and “means” to overcome COVID-19. Continental Europe can look to Britain for a sense of what lies ahead as omicron spreads. The head of the U.K. Health Security Agency says omicron is displaying a staggering growth rate compared to previous variants.

HONG KONG (AP) — Hundreds of people were trapped on the rooftop of a Hong Kong skyscraper after a major fire broke out, as firefighters rushed to stage a dramatic rescue and put out the blaze. The fire started in the early afternoon Wednesday at the World Trade Centre on Gloucester Road in the city’s popular Causeway Bay shopping district, according to a government notice. The 38-story tower houses both offices and a mall. At least 13 people were sent to hospital. Authorities say firefighters had largely put out the fire by the late afternoon and suspected the blaze started on building’s bottom floors.

BEIJING (AP) — China has reported its economy slowed in November, buffeted by coronavirus outbreaks, weak demand and supply chain disruptions. Retail sales were weaker than in October and inflationary pressures are complicating efforts to boost growth. The spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, Fu Linghui, said the global environment was becoming “more complex and severe.” But he said China still expects to meet economic goals for this year, even as tighter limits imposed on borrowing by real estate developers are crimping construction and sales in the all-important property sector. Fu said the Feb. 4-20 Beijing Winter Olympics would likely have “limited impact overall” since pandemic restrictions are limiting travel and other activities.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The State Department says a journalist accompanying U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on a trip to Britain and Southeast Asia has tested positive for COVID-19. Spokesman Ned Price said one of the 12 members of the traveling press corps on Blinken’s trip tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday in Malaysia. Neither Blinken, any of his senior staff nor other members of the press corps have tested positive. Blinken arrived in Kuala Lumpur late Tuesday from Jakarta, Indonesia, and still plans to make his final stop in Bangkok, Thailand, later Wednesday. He began his current journey in the English city of Liverpool, where he participated in a Group of Seven foreign ministers meeting over the weekend.
