(NFL)  A surge in COVID-19 cases across the NFL and United States as a whole has resulted in the postponement of multiple Week 15 games.

The league announced Friday that Saturday’s game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Cleveland Browns has been moved to Monday, while Sunday’s meetings between the Washington Football Team and the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams have been moved to Tuesday.

Raiders-Browns will air exclusively at 4 p.m. CT on NFL Network. Washington-Eagles and Seahawks-Rams will air at 6 p.m. CT on FOX.

“We have made these schedule changes based on medical advice and after discussion with the NFLPA as we are seeing a new, highly transmissible form of the virus this week resulting in a substantial increase in cases across the league,” the NFL announced in a statement.

“We continue to make decisions in consultation with medical experts to ensure the health and safety of the NFL community.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 teams explaining Friday’s changes to the schedule.

“The emergence of the Omicron variant is precisely the kind of change that warrants a flexible response,” Goodell wrote in a memo obtained by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL and its players association has temporarily clamped down on teams crossing the Canadian border and shut down operations of a sixth team. The moves were done in hopes of salvaging the season amid COVID-19 outbreaks across the league. The league and union made the announcement Sunday, adding the Detroit Red Wings to the list of teams told to shut down operations. Canadian teams will not play U.S.-based teams from Monday through Thursday, with those postponed games expected be rescheduled. All told, 27 games have been postponed through Saturday and 12 more through Thursday will be rescheduled.

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA  postponed five games for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday because of coronavirus-related concerns. The postponements involve nine teams.

Three games on Sunday night have been called off: Cleveland at Atlanta, Denver at Brooklyn and New Orleans at Philadelphia. Also postponed are Orlando’s game at Toronto on Monday and Washington’s game at Brooklyn on Tuesday.

Sunday’s move came on the same day that Atlanta announced star guard Trae Young entered the league’s health and safety protocols and the Los Angeles Lakers said coach Frank Vogel had also been added to the list. The Cavaliers said they had five players enter protocols on Sunday. Brooklyn has 10 players — plus some staff — in the protocols. More than 50 players have been placed on the protocols list in recent days.

The league and the National Basketball Players Association have been discussing a plan in which teams in desperate need of players would be able to sign reinforcements to 10-day contracts but without those deals impacting salary cap and luxury tax figures. That deal has not yet been finalized, though talks are continuing.
