BISMARCK, N.D. (Aug 16, 2013) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple today issued the following statement in response to the death of Gen. David C. Jones, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and North Dakota Rough Rider Award recipient. Jones passed away Saturday at a military retirement community in Virginia. He was 92.

“Betsy and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Gen. Jones, a North Dakota native and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,” Dalrymple said. “Gen. Jones’ record of service to his country is truly remarkable. He was instrumental in bringing forward far-reaching improvements to our nation’s overall military readiness. He made North Dakota and the entire nation proud.”

Gen. Jones served in the U.S Air Force. He was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1978-1982.  In May of 1982, he received the North Dakota Rough Rider Award. Gen. Jones grew up in Minot where he attended Minot High School. He also attended the University of North Dakota and Minot State Teacher’s College.
