LaCROSSE, Wis. (UJ) — The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team was held off the scoresheet by University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in a 3-0 loss Saturday afternoon.
USF took the early lead in the ninth minute. Cameron Schroder’s shot was kicked away by a Jimmie defender, but the ball ended up at the feet of Jesus Flores. Flores put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
St. Francis doubled their lead in the 20th minute on a penalty kick by Santos Contreras. Ander Santamarta was fouled just inside the box near the right side goal line to earn the spot kick. Contreras caught Jimmie keeper Mathew English (SO/Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) going the opposite way and easily converted the penalty.
The match stayed at 2-0 for the remainder of the first half and into the first 15 minutes of the second. In the 60th minute, Diego Cortes found the ball in an opportune spot following a collision between English and a USF player. Cortes had an open net and his flick into the net made it 3-0.
Shots were 16-8 in favor of the Saints, with the Saints also holding a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
English had six saves for the Jimmies. Jona Toussaint (SO/Berlin, Germany) had four shots with Axcele Biteghe (SO/Libreville, Gabon) and Wade McWhorter (FR/Loveland, Colo.) registering the shots on target.
UJ returns to action Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference match against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.)
