Bismarck (VCSU) – Valley City State women’s golfers Hayley Shanks and Sydney Carlson each placed in the Top 10 after competing at the UMary Invite on Monday and Tuesday in Bismarck. The first round of the tournament was played Monday at Hawktree Golf Course while the tournament concluded Tuesday with the second round at Riverwood Golf Course.

On the women’s side, the Vikings took second place out of three teams after finishing with a 765 team score. VCSU shot a 405 on Monday and improved its score by 45 strokes to card a 360 on Tuesday. The Viking women also bested Dickinson State by 14 strokes.

Leading VCSU were Hayley Shanks and Sydney Carlson, who each finished in the Top 10 individually. Shanks totaled a 184 (94-90) to finish in eithth place while Carlson fired a 188 (99-89) to finish ninth.

Winter Oldrock held an 11th place finish with a two-day 193 (103-90) and and Nevaeh Davis finished 13th with a 207 (116-91). Kara Schantz added a 212 (109-103) to finish in a tie for 15th at the tournament.

University of Mary won its home tournament with a 663 (338-325) team score. Marauder Carrie Carmichael took the individual title after a two-day 160 (82-78).

The Viking men finished in fifth place of six teams with a team score of 674 (332-342). VCSU’s Rory Gentzkow continued to anchor the Viking men with a 15th place finish after firing a 161 (79-82). Grant Inniger took 23rd with a 165 (76-89), and Jayden Ewoniuk finished in 24th with a 166 (86-80). Derek Bear carded a 182 (91-91) to finish in 36th and Wyatt Meisch shot a 211 (104-107) to finish 39th.

University of Mary’s Gavin Argent won medalist honors in a playoff against Alexandria Tech’s Lukas Justesen. Argent carded a four-over-par 148 (71-77) in the tournament and took the individual title after just one playoff hole. University of Sioux Falls took the team title with a 608 (297-311) team score.

UP NEXT: VCSU competes in the Montana State-Billings tournament on Oct. 3-4. The two-day tournament will be played at Lake Hills Golf Course in Billings, Mont.
