FREMONT, Neb. (UJ) https://www.jimmiepride.com/article/6707— The University of Jamestown football team committed seven turnovers Saturday afternoon in a 21-10 loss to 19th-ranked Midland University.
The Jimmies lost three fumbles and threw four interceptions, one of which gave the Warriors a short field and led to the go-ahead score, while another was returned for a touchdown to help put the game away.
After the opening kickoff went out of bounds, UJ started on its own 35-yard line and found the end zone eight plays later as Cade Torgerson (SR/Billings, Mont.) connected with Austin Stallan (FR/Northglenn, Colo.) on an eight-yard touchdown pass. Torgerson completed a 37-yard pass to Steve Justice (SR/Henderson, Nev.) earlier in the drive to get the Jimmies into Warrior territory, then an 11-yard rush by Zach Hammett (FR/Mohave Valley, Ariz.) moved Jamestown inside the 10-yard line. It was just the fourth touchdown given up by Midland in five games this season.
The first half ended with UJ holding on to a 7-0 lead. Jamestown’s defense forced the Warriors to go three-and-out on the first possession of the third quarter, and the resutling possession led to a 38-yard Aanon Peterson (FR/Andover, Minn.) field goal that made it 10-0 with 8:47 left in the third quarter. Midland answered with their first touchdown of the afternoon, a five-yard run by Isaiah Tucker, to cut the Jimmies’ lead to three points with 5:24 in the third.
UJ’s biggest drive of the game started with 32 seconds left in the third at their own 20-yard line. Twelve plays and 79 yards later, Jamestown faced a 4th-and-goal from the Midland 1-yard line. On a run by Hammett, the Warriors forced a fumble and recovered it in the end zone for a touchback, thwarting the Jimmies’ hopes of extending their lead.
Midland’s next drive stalled out after four plays and a punt gave the ball to Jamestown at its own 21-yard line with 8:00 to play. On second down, Torgerson was picked off by Trevor Ziemba at the UJ 26, giving the Warriors prime field position. Four plays later, Garrison Beach ran it in from a yard out and Midland had its first lead of the day.
Both sides punted on their next possessions, and with 2:41 left Jamestown started at its own 22-yard line. Torgerson was again intercepted, this time by Gage McGill, who took it 25 yards to the end zone for a 21-10 Warrior lead. The final Jimmie drive also resulted in an interception, and Midland had staved off the upset-minded Jamestown squad.
Total yards were nearly equal, with the Warriors holding a small 269-255 edge. Jamestown outgained Midland through the air, 232 yards to 81.
Torgerson completed 27-of-42 passes for 208 yards, with Micah Madyun (JR/Ramsey, Minn.) catching eight passes and Justice hauling in five.
Isaac Thompson (SR/Mesa, Ariz.) and Rashawn Benners (JR/Dayton, Ohio) both had seven tackles, and Paul Vandal (JR/Jamestown, N.D.) had three of UJ’s five sacks.
Jamestown, now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC, hosts Doane (Neb.) next Saturday at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
