Mary D. Sargeant, Jamestown, ND, died September 26 at SMP Health – Ave Maria, Jamestown. She was born February 4, 1939, to Elvina Amanda Jenkins and Stanley Jenkins at Hallock, MN. Mary married Alan B. Sargeant there December 22, 1962. The couple lived first in Devils Lake, ND, and then at Martin Lake near Bethel, MN, where their two children were born. In 1967 they moved to Jamestown. Education was important to Mary. She graduated from Hallock High School and attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth; St. Cloud State University; the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and the University of Jamestown, graduating in 1978. She worked at General Mills, Inc., while in Minneapolis and was a neighborhood Avon Lady in Jamestown. After graduation, she taught English at Jamestown High School from 1978-1996, fulfilling her childhood dream. In 1992 the couple moved to rural Jamestown where she loved living amidst their perennial gardens, hitting golf balls, walking tree-lined paths, and having adventures with her granddaughters. She enjoyed her students, meeting people, and having endless coffee with friends. She especially enjoyed time spent with her friends from P.E.O, Red Hats, Women Walkers, the Women’s book club, and Hardee’s. She loved music, going to plays, playing golf, traveling, and winter months on the beach in Florida. She treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown.
Mary is survived by her husband of 60 years (Alan); two children, Glen A., Jamestown, and Lynn M., Brookings SD; and two grandchildren, Amanda and Emily, Jamestown. She was preceded in death by three siblings: John, Dorothy, and Edith. She is survived by four siblings: Carol (Jerry) Kalinowski, Minneapolis, MN; William (Nancy), Crosby, MN; Anna Glad, Omaha, NE; and Lorna Daniels, Alexandria, VA. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary Jenkins, Hallock, MN, and Karen (Douglas) Olmen, Penrose, CO, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation – Friday, September 30 from 4pm to 7pm at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown
Funeral Service – Saturday, October 1 at 1pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown.
Interment – Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to JRMC Hospice, Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, or SMP Health – Ave Maria, Jamestown
