BILLINGS, MONT. (VCSU) The Valley City State men’s golf team fired a season-best 306, and each men’s golfer fired a season-best round in the fall season finale Yellowjacket Invitational played Monday and Tuesday. The tournament was held at the par-72 Lake Hills Golf Course and was hosted by Montana State University-Billings.

MEN
VCSU’s men played two rounds on Monday, carding a season-low 310 in the opening round, and finishing with a 320 in round two. The men fired a 306 in Tuesday’s final round, besting their previous season-low team score set on Monday. VCSU’s men finished in eighth place out of eight teams competing at the tournament.

University of Jamestown was the only other NAIA school in the field, made up of primarily NCAA Division II schools. Montana State-Billings won the tournament with a four-under-par 860 (285-281-294). Dawson Strobel of MSU-Billings also won medalist honors after a five-under-par 211 (69-70-72).

Each of VCSU’s men also carded a season-best round during the Yellowjacket Invitational. Jayden Ewoniuk finished with an eight-over-par 225 (73-77-75). Ewoniuk opened the tournament with a career-best 73 in the opening round to help him finish in a tie for 19th place.

Rory Gentzkow was one stroke behind Ewoniuk with a nine-over-par 226 to tie for 22nd. He carded a season-best 74 in the opening round, followed by a 77 and 75. Grant Inniger carded a 241 and placed 34th (79-86-76). Inniger’s final round 76 ties his career-best as a Viking.

Rounding out the Vikings included Wyatt Meisch in 39th place with a 252 (84-80-88) and Derek Bear in 40th with a 257 (87-90-80). Meish and Bear each set new season-bests with their individual rounds of 80.

WOMEN
Valley City State’s Hayley Shanks tied a career-best 80 in the first round of the Yellowjacket Invitational to lead the way on the women’s side. She finished the tournament with a second round 88 to place 18th.

Sydney Carlson followed in 28th place with a 180 (90-90). Rounding out the Viking women included Kara Schantz who carded a 209 (102-107), Sydney Staus with a 214 (103-111) and Megan Haurgrud with a 247 (123-124).

The Viking women finished in seventh place out of seven teams with a two-day 771 (375-396). South Dakota School of Mines won the tournament with a 634 (310-324). Hardrocker Rianna Garland won individual medalist honors after a 10-over-par 154 (78-76).

UP NEXT: VCSU will take the winter off before resuming tournament play in the spring.
