MAYVILLE, N.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State volleyball team fell to Mayville State Wednesday night in a close five-set road match. The Comets edged the Vikings by final set scores of 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-7.

Sadie Hansen posted a double-double Wednesday including a season-best 54 set assists and 12 digs for the Vikings.

Mayville improves to 8-12 overall and 3-3 in the conference while VCSU is now 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the North Star. VCSU and Mayville now sit in a tie for third place in the conference standings, behind nationally ranked teams Viterbo and Bellevue.

VCSU fell 25-22 in the first set after Mayville took six of the final seven points. The Vikings came back to take the next two sets 25-21 and 25-22 and put the pressure on the Comets. Mayville forced a fifth set after finishing the set four victory on a 7-3 run to win 25-22.

Mayville State followed through when it mattered though, finishing the match on a 10-2 rally to put away the final set 15-7. The Comets hit .364 and totaled nine kills with just one attack error in the final set to secure the 3-2 victory.

Despite falling in the five-set battle, the Vikings outplayed the Comets in major stat categories including kills (65-60), hitting percentage (0.186-0.179), assists (58-57), service aces (4-1) and digs (86-84). Mayville bested VCSU in total blocks (7-5).

Outside hitters Bailey Nelson and Emma Lucas combined for over half of VCSU’s kills Wednesday night. Nelson finished with 19 kills and a pair of service aces while Lucas added 15 kills for the Vikings.

Danielle Hagler added nine kills while Morgan Nelson and Morgan Freije added eight kills each. JayCee Richter tallied a team-high 25 digs and Delani Clarke chipped in 19. It is Clarke’s fourth match tallying a season-high 19 digs.

Mayville’s Elora Passa and Ashley Pyburn each finished with 19 kills in the match. Passa added 26 assists while Rachel Hill tallied 29 assists for the Comets. Natalie Hadrava totaled 25 digs and Emily Condon chipped in 17 digs Wednesday.
