At Hansen Stadium

Hastings College 23 Jamestown 16

(UJ) The University of Jamestown football team struggled in the first half Saturday afternoon, punting on five of its six first-half possessions in a 23-16 loss to Hastings (Neb.) at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.

The Broncos led 10-0 at the half and extended their lead to 16-0 on a 39-yard touchdown pass from John Zamora to Jaishawn Wright in the third quarter.

Jamestown capped off a 10-play, 75-yard drive as Cade Torgerson (SR/Billings, Mont.) connected with Javon Bowie-Monteiro (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) from five yards out to make it 16-6 with 4:27 to play in the third quarter.

Aanon Peterson (FR/Andover, Minn.)’s 40-yard field goal cut the Hastings lead to 16-9 early in the fourth quarter, but Antoine Murphy returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to put the Broncos in front 23-9.

The Jimmies’ next three drives resulted in two punts and a turnover on downs, but the defense held its ground by forcing Hastings into three drive-ending punts. With 1:11 to play, Torgerson and Bowie-Monteiro combined fto find the end zone for the second time in the game, this time from 19 yards out. Peterson’s extra point cut the lead to 23-16.

UJ went for an onside kick but the Broncos recovered and were able to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

Torgerson competed 28 of 58 passes for 308 yards and became the Jimmies’ career leader in passing yards, breaking the previous record of 6658 yards held by Beau Eriksson (2012-15).

Micah Madyun (JR/Ramsey, Minn.) caught eight passes for 134 yards and Bowie-Monteiro finished with eight grabs for 47 yards. Zach Hammett (FR/Mohave Valley, Ariz.) carried 10 times for 44 yards.

Paul Vandal (JR/Jamestown, N.D.) led the defense with eight tackles and added 1 1/2 more sacks to his season total. Ezra Belingheri (SO/Sparks, Nev.) and Parker Hager (JR/Steele, N.D.) both had a forced fumble and recovery.

UJ (3-6 overall, 2-6 GPAC) is at Dordt (Iowa) University next Saturday.
