VCSU The Valley City State women’s basketball team has been selected to finish fourth in the 2022-23 North Star Athletic Association Coaches’ Poll, the conference office announced Monday.

The Vikings finished third in the conference last season with a 7-7 conference record and edged Dickinson State in the head-to-head tie breaker. VCSU recorded a 10-15 overall record in 2021-22.

Valley City State hosts its season opener on Saturday against Providence College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Bubble.

Each NSAA member will play a total of 14 conference games this season. The Vikings open the conference season at home against Dickinson State on December 3. The women will tip at 3 p.m. followed by the men at 5 p.m.

Dakota State was voted as the unanimous favorite to win the league title. The Trojans tallied all eight first place votes and 64 points to secure the top spot in the preseason poll.  DaSU swept both NSAA regular-season and postseason title for the second straight season, finishing with an overall record of 27-8 and 13-1 record in league play.  Dakota State advanced to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament Opening Round’s championship game last season.

Mayville State was picked to finish second in the preseason poll after totaling 55 points in the poll.  Bellevue placed third with 47 points.  Valley City State edged out Viterbo by one point (35-34) to place fourth in the poll.

Dickinson State registered 29 points to finish sixth in the poll.  Presentation was tabbed to finish seventh, followed by Waldorf in eighth with nine points.

Points are awarded on an 8-1 basis and coaches could vote for their own team.

The 2022-23 NAIA Women’s Basketball season gets underway on Thursday.

The NSAA conference season begins on Dec. 3 with four games on schedule, with traveling partners playing each other.  Dakota State visits Bellevue, Dickinson State travels to Valley City State, Mayville State hosts Presentation, and Viterbo welcomes Waldorf.  All those teams will switch sites on their final regular-season contests on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023.

All eight North Star members will compete in the women’s basketball postseason conference tournament, which is set for Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, at four higher seeds.  The four opening round winners will move on to the Final Four tournament held at Civic Arena in Watertown, S.D., on Feb. 26-27, 2023.

The North Star Women’s Basketball Postseason Tournament’s champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament’s Opening Round scheduled for March 7-8, 2023.  The winner of the national tournament’s opening round will advance to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa from March 13-18, 2023.

(VCSU) The Valley City State men’s basketball team has been picked fourth in the NSAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll released on Monday.
The Vikings received 40 points in the poll after finishing third in the standings last season. Valley City State is coming off an 18-11 overall record last season and an 8-6 mark in conference play. The Vikings advanced to the NSAA Tournament Semifinals before falling to Bellevue University.
Valley City State opens the 2022-23 season this weekend with a pair of home games. VCSU hosts Northwestern College on Friday at 8 p.m., and then hosts Dordt University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Bellevue (Neb.) was the league head coaches’ pick to win the 2022-23 North Star Athletic Association Men’s Basketball title.
The Bruins, who shared the NSAA regular-season title with Viterbo (Wis.) in 2021-22 season with a 9-5 record each, collected six first place votes and 56 points in the preseason poll.  Bellevue was 20-13 overall record last season.  BU won the NSAA postseason tournament and advanced to the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament Opening Round before falling to No. 1 ranked William Penn (Iowa).
Mayville State (N.D.) finished second in the preseason poll after picking up a first-place vote and totaled 49 points.  The V-Hawks picked up the final first place vote, recording 45 points to finish third in the conference preseason poll.
Valley City State (N.D.) finished fourth in the preseason poll with 40 points, edging out Dakota State (S.D.) who received 38 points to place fifth.  Dickinson State (N.D.) was sixth after tallying 31 points, followed by Waldorf (Iowa) seventh with 16 points and Presentation (S.D.) eighth with 12 points.
