Jamestown 73 Mayville State 64
Jamestown (UJ) The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team outscored Mayville State 23-8 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 73-64 win Thursday evening at Harold Newman Arena.
Hannah DeMars (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) had 21 points and 11 rebounds while Kia Tower (SR/Bigfork, MN) and Audrey Rodakowski (JR/Dickinson, ND) finished with 12 points each as the Jimmies won their sixth straight season opener.
Jordan Zrust led all players with 25 points and 13 rebounds and Jes Mertens was also in double figures for the Comets with 11.
Trailing 56-50 entering the fourth quarter, the Jimmies got six straight points from DeMars to tie the game with 8:14 to play. Mertens scored to put MSU back in front, but a basket by Tower and a three-pointer by Kate Busek (SO/Fargo, ND) gave UJ the lead, which they would not relinquish.
The Comets managed only four points in the final 5:45 and were 4-for-17 (including 0-for-10 on threes) in the fourth. On the other side of the ball, the Jimmies went 7-for-10 from the field in the last 10 minutes.
Jamestown opened the game on an 11-2 run but MSU responded with 16 of the last 23 points to lead by one going into the second quarter.
After a pair of Tower free throws made it a 29-27 game with 3:07 in the first half, the Comets went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to nine. The Jimmies trailed 38-32 at the break.
MSU led by as many as 12 on three different occasions in the third quarter, the latest coming on Kayla Rocholl’s three-pointer that made it 51-39 with 4:48 to play. DeMars and Sarah Lenz (SO/Belle Plaine, MN) hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead in half, and after Taylor Dean’s three increased the Comet lead back to nine, Lenz knocked down another three-pointer and DeMars drove to the rim for another basket to cut the deficit to four.
UJ defeated Mayville State for the third time in their last four meetings, with the teams set to meet again on November 8 in Mayville. The Jimmies return to action on November 1 at Presentation (S.D.) Game time is set for 7 p.m.
