SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (UJ)— The Dordt University Defenders outscored the University of Jamestown football team 17-0 in the third quarter on the way to a 44-24 victory Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown led 10-7 after the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Cade Torgerson (SR/Billings, Mont.) and a 37-yard field goal by Aanon Peterson (FR/Andover, Minn.). 

Dordt tied the game early in the second quarter on a Fulton Gunderson 36-yard field goal, then retook the lead as Gunderson connected on a 29-yard field goal with 4:28 in the half.

The Defenders extended their advantage to 20-10 as Kade McDaniel threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Konnor Knauf. UJ quickly made it a one-score game again as Parker Hager (JR/Steele, N.D.) returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards down the left sideline for the Jimmies’ second touchdown of the half.

In the third quarter, Dordt engineered three scoring drives, two of them finding the end zone, on the way to a 37-17 lead entering the final quarter.

McDaniel threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Connor Dodd, covering 41 yards, as the Defenders pushed their lead to 44-17 with 8:55 remaining.

Torgerson led UJ to a touchdown with 5:17 to play, covering 75 yards in 10 plays, ending with a 26-yard pass to Ryan Collins (JR/Akron, Ohio) for the final points of the game.

Jamestown finished with 266 yards of total offense as Torgerson completed 19 of 30 passes for 193 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Micah Madyun (JR/Ramsey, Minn.) hauled in six catches for 44 yards and Zach Hammett (FR/Mohave Valley, Ariz.) carried 16 times for 88 yards.

Parker Chaffee (SO/Phelan, Calif.) led the defense with seven tackles and recorded the Jimmies’ lone sack. Rashawn Benners (JR/Dayton, Ohio) and Aaron Mack (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) both finished with five tackles.

UJ (3-7, 2-7 GPAC) has a bye next weekend before finishing the season on November 12 at Mount Marty (S.D.)

Women’s Soccer

Briar Cliff 1 Jamestown 1

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (UJ) https://www.jimmiepride.com/article/6793— The University of Jamestown women’s soccer team clinched its second straight GPAC conference title Saturday after a 1-1 draw against Briar Cliff University.

UJ needed either a win or tie against the Chargers to claim the regular-season GPAC title and the number-one seed in the conference tournament, which begins Wednesday. Jamestown will host eighth-seed Doane (Neb.) at 6 p.m. 

Mady Soumare was fouled in the box less than two minutes into the contest, and Hannah Shuttleworth converted the penalty kick to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead.

Gaby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia) tied the game for Jamestown in the 19th minute with an assist by Kamryn Fiscus (SR/Yakima, Wash.), and the rest of the first half ended without another shot by either side.

Content with the 1-1 scoreline, the Jimmies did not attempt a shot in the second half. Tea Pence (FR/Hamilton, Ohio) stopped four of the five shots she faced.

UJ ends the regular season 12-4-2 overall and 11-0-1 in the GPAC, extending its conference unbeaten streak to 24 matches (22-0-2) over the last two seasons.

Men’s Soccer

Briar Cliff 2 Jamestown 0

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (UJ) — The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team saw its postseason hopes dashed with a 2-0 loss at Briar Cliff University Saturday afternoon. 

UJ needed a victory to overtake the Chargers for the seventh seed in the eight-team conference tournament.

In the 15th minute, Bernardo Torres put Briar Cliff in front by stepping in front of a Jimmie pass and beating goalkeeper Jort Ruijssenaars (FR/Zeist, The Netherlands). The lead increased to 2-0 after 27 minutes as Guillermo Francisco Gomez took a Vinicius Gregorio pass and put the ball in the back of the net.

Despite putting only one shot on goal in the first half, Jamestown had five attempts on target in the second half. Total shots were 11-9 in favor of BCU and both teams ended with seven shots on goal.

The Jimmies finish the season with an overall record of 6-11-1, 3-7-1 in the GPAC.

Women’s Volleyball

Jamestown Def Briar Cliff 25-22,25-13,25-17

(UJ) The second-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team sent its four seniors off in style Saturday afternoon, sweeping Briar Cliff (Iowa) University on Senior Day at Harold Newman Arena.

Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.), Kadyn Mehring (SR/Carrington, N.D.), Averi Beyer (SR/Fargo, N.D.), and Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) played their final regular-season game in front of the Jimmie faithful. The win moved UJ’s record to 27-2 overall, 14-1 in the GPAC, and clinched at least a share of the conference title.

Jamestown took a 16-11 lead in the first set and went ahead 19-15 after a BCU service error. The Chargers rallied to tie the score at 19-19, then a pair of kills by Darienne Johnson (JR/Eastpointe, Mich.) and an ace from Holen put the Jimmies back in front. Briar Cliff got as close as 23-22 before UJ took the last two points.

Backed by a .414 team hitting percentage, Jamestown cruised to a 25-13 second set win. An 8-0 run turned a 4-3 deficit into a comfortable 11-4 edge, and the Chargers got no closer than three the rest of the way. UJ closed out the set winning seven of the last eight points for a 2-0 match lead.

The Jimmies rallied back from being down 11-8 in the third, using a 7-1 run to retake the momentum and the match. Kills from Holen, Hegerle, Johnson, and Mehring down the stretch provided the winning points.

Holen led the way with 13 kills and turned in 19 digs and three blocks on defense. Hegerle finished with 12 kills, 18 assists, and 19 digs. Johnson hit a team-high .538 and ended with seven kills.

Tenley Buddenhagen (SO/Huron, S.D.) (11) and Paige Oswald (JR/Frazee, Minn.) (10) both reached double figures in assists. Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) had a match-high 23 digs and Beyer was also in double-digit dig totals with 10.

The Jimmies close out the regular season 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University. 

Women’s Hockey

Midland University 5 Jamestown 1

(UJ) The Midland University women’s hockey team scored four unanswered goals in a 5-1 victory over the University of Jamestown women’s hockey team Saturday afternoon at Wilson Arena.

With UJ down 1-0 after one period, Gaby Schroder (FR/Brandon, S.D.) drew the Jimmies level with a shorthanded goal at the 3:49 mark of the second.

Kayla Flanigan and Ally Rakowski both scored second-period goals to give Midland a 3-1 edge going into the final twenty minutes.

Rakowski, who had the Warriors first score, completed her hat trick at the 1:24 mark of the third, and Kaeleigh Kachmarski rounded out the scoring 96 seconds later.

Shots were 31 to 16 in favor of Midland. Lilah Drew (FR/Bolton, ON) made 26 saves for the Jimmies.

The teams meet again 12 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Arena.

Men’s D-1 Hockey

MINOT, N.D. (UJ)– The No. 1 Minot State University Beavers hockey team scored five goals in a span of just under eight minutes in the third period, defeating the 10th-ranked University of Jamestown Jimmies 5-2 Saturday afternoon. 

Justin Dumont (JR/Atlanta, Ga.) scored his first goal of the season at the 9:54 mark of the first period on assists by Brad Fortin (FR/Langley, British Columbia) and Carter Johnson (SR/Meeteetse, Wyo.) as UJ led 1-0 after one.

Neither team lit the lamp in the second period, and it was the Jimmies who got the game’s next goal in the third. Dumont assisted Greg Susinski (JR/Calgary, Alberta) for his fifth of the year at 8:13.

The Beavers made it a one-goal game on a shorthanded score by Drew Carter at 11:16, then Connor Navrot’s tally at 15:45 tied the game and opened the floodgates. Joey Moffatt (16:44) and Carter (17:04 and 19:01) finished off the scoring.

Jaysen MacLean (JR/Port Alberni, British Columbia) had 35 stops in goal for Jamestown. Shots were 40-24 in favor of MSU.

UJ returns home to begin a weekend series against Northern Illinois Friday at 7 p.m.
