VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The Valley City State men’s basketball team scored 87 points Saturday night but it wasn’t enough as Dordt University shot 57 percent en route to a 105-87 win over the Vikings
Dordt put up 54 points in the first half, blistering the nets with 66 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes. A Duke Carey 3-pointer had the Vikings within 35-27 with 5:35 remaining in the first half, but Dordt finished the half on a 19-7 run as they took a 54-34 lead into the locker room. The Vikings climbed to within 14 points in the second half, but the Defenders had an answer for every Viking run.
Duoth Gach scored 27 points to lead five Vikings in double figures. The senior guard shot 12-for-20 from the field and also added seven rebounds. Daevonte Munson had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Joseph Owens, Cayden Rickard and Tate Hebrink all scored 10 for the Vikings. Duke Carey made a team-high two 3-pointers as he finished with eight points.
Valley City State finishes its tough opening weekend with a 1-1 record, defeating Northwestern College on Friday night before Saturday’s loss to Dordt. The Defenders improved to 2-0 on the season, which included a victory at Mayville State on Friday.
Valley City State shot 44 percent in Saturday’s game, going 37-for-84 from the field. They were 8-for-23 on 3’s and went 5-for-10 on free throws. Dordt finished the game at 57 percent overall (38-67), 41 percent on 3’s (11-27) and 69 percent on free throws (18-26).
Dordt had a 47-35 rebounding advantage, but the Vikings held a 12-10 edge in offensive rebounds. VCSU turned the ball over just five times while forcing 11 turnovers by Dordt.
“We only had 11 turnovers all weekend, which is a good sign,” said VCSU head coach Ryan Montgomery. “Dordt is a really good basketball team. Last night against Northwestern was awesome, we played at a very high level to get that win. Tonight, we just didn’t have what we needed.”
Bryce Coppock scored 19 points to lead six Defenders in double figures. Cade Bleeker added 18 points and made four 3’s. Luke Rankin dished out nine assists for Dordt.
Up next: Valley City State hosts Minnesota-Morris on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The women’s game tips at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at about 7:30 p.m.
