Jamestown 4 Midland University 3
(UJ) The University of Jamestown women’s soccer team held off a comeback attempt by Midland (Neb.) Saturday afternoon at the Jimmie Turf Field, defeating the Warriors 4-3 to advance to the championship game of the GPAC postseason tournament.
The Jimmies will host Hastings (Neb.) Thursday at 6 p.m. for the postseason championship. A UJ victory would give Briar Cliff (Iowa) the GPAC’s second automatic national bid, while the Broncos would need to win in Jamestown to clinch the auto-bid.
Goals by Kassandra Noguera (FR/Anaheim, Calif.) (17th minute), Gaby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia) (35th minute), and Cassandra Diaz (SR/Montebello, Calif.) (37th minute) staked the Jimmies to a 3-0 halftime lead, and it appeared UJ had the game well in hand.
Midland began their comeback when Bailey Locano scored on a pass from Arianna Flores in the 61st minute, then fifty seconds later, Flores cut the lead to 3-2 with an unassisted goal of her own. The Warriors then tied the match on a goal by Brittany Llanes in the 73rd minute, and both teams looked to find the go-ahead goal inside of the final 17 minutes.
That goal came in the 75th minute as Diaz completed the brace, putting home a rebound on Kayla Combs (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.)’ crossbar-deflected shot.
Anna Cole (FR/Laurel, Mont.) had five saves for the Jimmies, and Hannah Tillison had two for the Warriors before leaving in the 52nd minute as a result of a collision with Sarkis. Outfield player Anastasia Bitzes put on the gloves for the final 38 minutes and recorded one save.
Shots were 13-12 in favor of Midland, as were shots on goal (8-7).

Jamestown Def Dordt University 25-21,25-19,25-20
The Jimmies, now 29-2 overall, host #9 Dakota Wesleyan in the GPAC semifinals on Wednesday night.
(UJ) The second-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the GPAC postseason tournament with a sweep of No. 22 Dordt (Iowa) University Saturday evening at Harold Newman Arena.
Jamestown (29-2) will host No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) while Concordia (Neb.) plays at Midland (Neb.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Despite losing their seventh straight match, Dordt (13-12) gave the Jimmies all they could handle. The Defenders held leads in both of the first two sets and trimmed an eight-point third set deficit down to three before UJ pulled away.
Jamestown used a 4-0 run midway through the first set, breaking a 15-15 tie and riding the momentum to a 25-21 win. UJ scored five of the final seven points after Dordt got within 20-19, finishing with a .368 hitting percentage and 18 kills in the first frame.
The Defenders led 10-5 in the second before the Jimmies reeled off four straight to cut the lead to one. Five straight points by Dordt opened up an 18-13 advantage, and after a block by Ellie Voss and Allison Timmermans, the lead was 19-17. A kill by Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) ignited an eight-point UJ rally, enough to take a 25-19 win.
The Jimmies appeared to be on their way to an easy sweep, racing out to a 12-3 third set lead. Dordt hung around, scoring 11 of the next 16 points to make it a 17-14 deficit, but could not get any closer than three points the rest of the way. Jamestown ended the match with three of the last four points in a 25-20 set win.
Holen had 10 kills and 16 digs while Aleah Zieske (SO/Spicer, Minn.) and Logan Sherman (JR/Marshall, Minn.) both finished with eight. Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) passed out 17 assists and had 14 digs, and Paige Oswald (JR/Frazee, Minn.) ended with 16 assists and seven digs.
Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) had a match-high 26 digs. Sherman and Lexi Olson (SO/Langdon, N.D.) each had five total blocks.
UJ outhit Dordt .221 to .023 for the match and had 42 kills to the Defenders’ 26.
