Jamestown 104 Midland University 72

FREMONT, Neb. (UJ) — Reid Gastner (SO/Lake City, MN) and Mason Walters (SR/Jamestown, ND) both recorded double-doubles and the fifth-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team shot 56 percent from the floor in a 104-72 win over Midland University Saturday evening.

Jamestown improves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC while Midland falls to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Walters (16), Gastner (15), and Will Cordes (JR/Shakopee, MN) (12) combined for 43 of UJ’s 56 first-half points and shot a combined 15-of-23 overall (6-of-10 from three-point range). 

Midland led 6-5 just under two minutes into the game, but Jamestown went ahead 23-12 after a Cordes three-pointer at the 11:29 mark. The Warriors would get within nine points before UJ went on a 17-6 run to lead 56-36 with 1:14 before the half.

The second half started with the Jimmies scoring 12 of the first 14 points, and Gastner’s three made it 68-40 3:24 into the half. UJ hit on only 3-of-14 three-point attempts in the final twenty minutes, but made 15 of 19 shots inside the arc. 

Cordes finished with 18 points and was joined in double figures by Marc Kjos (SR/Lake City, MN) and Colby Vazquez (JR/Millbrae, CA) with 10 points each. Cole Woodford (JR/Redwood Falls, MN) had seven points and six assists. 

Jamestown had a 45-30 rebounding advantage as well as a 28-17 edge in points off turnovers as well as points in the paint (38-18).

MINOT, N.D.- (UJ)- The University of Jamestown men’s wrestling team defeated the University of Saskatchewan 53-3 Saturday at the Beaver Bash Duals, hosted by Minot State University.

The Jimmies won eight of nine contested matches and earned another six points with a forfeit at 125 in a victory over the University of Saskatchewan.

Kaena De Santos had the lone win for UJ against the host Beavers, defeating Nathan Baca by 8-3 decision. Minot State recorded three pins and three decisions among their nine victories as the teams met in their first dual since 2017.

Women’s Wrestling

MINOT, N.D.– The 14th-ranked University of Jamestown women’s wrestling team stepped out of NAIA competition Saturday, competing at the Beaver Bash Duals hosted by Minot State University.

Jamestown faced the University of Saskatchewan and a pair of NCAA Division II opponents in Chadron State (Neb.) and Minot State. After losing the first two duals, the Jimmies came back with a 33-10 win over Minot State to finish the day with a 1-2 record.

Arianna Marrufo (SR/Dos Palos, Calif.) and Kelly LaCost (JR/Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned UJ’s victories in contested matches against the Huskies in Saturday’s opener. The Jimmies picked up wins due to open weights at 101 and 109, then Marrufo scored a 10-0 tech fall win at 123. Jamestown was open at 155 and 170, giving Saskatchewan a 24-15 lead going into the final match. LaCost sent UJ out on a winning note with a pin of Myah Phillips in 2:15.

Chadron State 28, Jamestown 16

Marrufo and LaCost won their second matches of the day while Allie Baudhuin (130) and Luisita Jara (JR/Menifee, Calif.) (136) also had their arms raised against Chadron State. Three open weights (116, 155, and 170) were the difference as UJ closed the gap to 13-11 following Jara’s win.

Marrufo won by 12-1 tech fall against Isabell Ortiz, and Baudhuin followed with a 10-0 tech fall over Josephine Wearmouth at 130. Jara was a 5-4 winner by decision against Ryleigh Dye at 136 before Chadron State took the next three matches. LaCost again pinned her opponent, taking 2:37 to defeat Sofia Rubio.

Just three contested matches happened in the Jimmie-Beaver dual, but Jenna Gerhardt, Marrufo, and LaCost each won as UJ finished the day with a win over the host Beavers. 

Gerhardt defeated Zoe Desloges by 10-0 tech fall at 116, Marrufo won by 12-1 tech fall over Jazmin Gorder at 123, and LaCost pinned Madison Parson in 2:46 to account for 13 of the team’s 33 points. Minot’s wins came via forfeits at 155 and 170, with both teams open at 109.

FREMONT, Neb. (UJ)– The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team outscored Midland University 41-26 in the second half to come away with a 75-61 win Saturday evening at Wikert Event Center.

Jamestown (5-1, 3-0 GPAC) won its third straight game and will play at Concordia (Neb.) Tuesday. Midland falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.

Hannah DeMars (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the second half and was joined in double figures by Kia Tower (SR/Bigfork, MN) with 16 and Kate Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) with 15.

Midland led 17-15 after the first quarter and scored the first six points of the second for their biggest lead of the half. Tower and DeMars combined for 11 of UJ’s final 13 points in the second, helping the Jimmies trim the deficit to just one going into the break.

A Tower three-pointer brought Jamestown level at 39-39 with 8:18 left in the third, and after the Warriors made a pair of free throws to retake the lead, DeMars made a three to put the Jimmies ahead by one. The teams would trade leads before Cordes swished home a three-pointer to start an 8-2 run that gave UJ a 52-47 edge entering the fourth.

Cordes, Tower, and DeMars shot a combined 7-for-8 overall and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the final period, and the Jimmies hit 67 percent as a team to close out the win. The Warriors got as close as 54-51, but on UJ’s next trip down the floor, Cordes hit a three to start a 15-2 run that put the game away.

DeMars pulled down eight rebounds while Kate Busek (SO/Fargo, ND) grabbed seven boards and dished out six assists. UJ outrebounded Midland 37-21 while outshooting them .537 to .418. Jamestown also made 12 threes and had a 30-24 advantage in points off the bench.

Women’s Volleyball

The NAIA Opening Round

(UJ) The Jimmies are going back to Sioux City, Iowa, and the Round of 24 in the National Tournament

The second-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team advanced to the final site of the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa, with a sweep of St. Ambrose (Iowa) University Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown (32-2) will join 23 other teams at the final site beginning November 30. Pool assignments will be announced by the NAIA no later than 5 p.m. Central on naia.org.

The Jimmies used a 3-0 run to open up a 12-8 lead in set one, eventually increasing the advantage to 16-11 after a kill by Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.). The Fighting Bees closed the gap to 16-14 before Darienne Johnson (JR/Eastpointe, Mich.)’s kill helped UJ win six of the next seven points. A kill by Lexi Olson (SO/Langdon, N.D.) and SAU attack error provided the winning points and a 1-0 match lead.

A .538 hitting percentage in the second set helped Jamestown cruise to a 25-9 win. A 12-1 run turned a five-point lead into a 16-point cushion, and the Jimmies allowed their fewest points in sets one through four this season.

After making no errors in set two, UJ committed only one in the third while hitting .542 to round out the sweep. St. Ambrose got as close as 8-5 before the Jimmies won eight of the next 10 points. Jamestown finished on a 7-1 run, capped off by Holen’s match-high 12th kill of the match.

The Jimmies outhit SAU .456 to .001, with the edge in aces (9-1), digs (49-32), and total blocks (8-1).

Olson and Aleah Zieske (SO/Spicer, Minn.) both had eight kills. Olson hit .800 on ten attempts, while Holen hit .706 on 17 attempts, with neither player making an error. Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) passed out 19 assists and Paige Oswald (JR/Frazee, Minn.) 12. 

Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) racked up 17 digs and Anna Holen had 11. Logan Sherman (JR/Marshall, Minn.) had five block assists while Olson and Darienne Johnson each had a solo block and three block assists.

Women’s Hockey

MINOT, N.D.- (UJ)– The fifth-ranked Minot State University Beavers scored twice in both the first and third periods to defeat the No. 15 University of Jamestown women’s hockey team 4-0 Saturday afternoon.

Shots were 43-19 in favor of Minot State. Lilah Drew (FR/Bolton, ON) had 39 saves in goal for Jamestown. Both team had five power play chances, with the Beavers getting the game’s only power play goal.

The teams meet again in Minot Sunday at 2 p.m.

NEWARK, Del.– The seventh-ranked University of Jamestown men’s hockey team won both games of its east coast road trip, defeating No. 22 Stony Brook (N.Y.) University 3-1 Friday and No. 25 University of Delaware 6-0 on Saturday.

FRIDAY
Carter Johnson (SR/Meeteetse, Wyo.) gave the Jimmies a 1-0 lead at Stony Brook, scoring his first of the season on assist by Kole Christensson (FR/Calgary, Alberta) at 8:23 of the second period.

Christensson doubled UJ’s lead with his sixth of the year at 11:23 of the third, with the assist by Brandon Weare (FR/Calgary, Alberta). Stony Brook got on the board just 25 seconds later, and the score remained 2-1 until Greg Susinski (JR/Calgary, Alberta) added an empty-net goal with one second left for a 3-1 win. The goal was Susinski’s sixth of the season.

Weare stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced between the pipes. The Jimmies outshot Stony Brook 42-36, including 19-9 in the second period.

SATURDAY
Six different players had goals as Jamestown blanked Delaware 6-0.

Brandon Weare made 30 saves in his third shutout of the season, all coming over his last four appearances. The Jimmie goaltender has won all four of those games while posting a 0.25 goals-against average. 

Gage Thompson (SR/Valley City, N.D.)’s third of the season, assisted by Reid Wilson (JR/Castlegar, British Columbia), came at 9:09 of the first period to give UJ a 1-0 lead. Kole Christensson made it 2-0 Jamestown at 14:01 on assists by Brad Fortin (FR/Langley, British Columbia) and Carter Johnson.

Jordon Kromm (JR/Calgary, Alberta) extended the Jimmie lead to 3-0 with a second period goal, set up by Wilson, at 4:38.

Three goals in a span of four minutes and ten seconds broke the game open in the third. Carter Johnson from Wilson at 13:12, Philippe Lessard (SO/Edmonton, Alberta) from Greg Susinski at 16:49, and an unassisted goal by Jordan Baranesky (FR/Red Lake, Ontario) at 17:22 accounted for the Jamestown scoring in the final period.

Shots were 36-30 in favor of Jamestown while both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
