Sunday Big Island Classic Hilo, Hawaii William Carey 63 VCSU 54
HILO, HAWAII (VCSU) – The Valley City State women’s basketball team fell to William Carey University Sunday at the Big Island Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
The Crusaders held a narrow lead most of the way, but VCSU took an 11-5 run to tie the game 27-27 at halftime. The Vikings held a 36-35 advantage on an Allie Negen basket in the third quarter, but William Carey pulled off an 8-2 run to finish the period and build a 43-38 advantage. The Crusaders held on down the stretch to defeat VCSU 63-54.
VCSU is now 8-4 overall while William Carey improves to 10-3 on the season.
Ashlyn Diemert led scoring for VCSU with 10 points and Hailey Roberts chipped in nine, while Taryn Dieterle and JayCee Richter each scored seven. Diemert, Dieterle and Allie Critchley each grabbed six rebounds, helping the Vikings to a 49-44 rebounding advantage in the game.
VCSU shot 32 percent on field goals Sunday (20-63), 21 percent on 3-pointers (6-29) and 73 percent on free throws (8-11). William Carey shot 34 percent from the field (23-68), 13 percent on 3’s (2-15) and 60 percent from the free throw line (15-25).
The Crusaders tallied 13 assists while turning the ball over just nine times. VCSU totaled 11 assists and turned the ball over 21 times.
William Carey had three players score in double figures led by Lauren Rowley with 24 points while McKinley Seal totaled 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
UP NEXT: VCSU will round out play at the Big Island Classic on Monday. The Vikings are slated to take on Morningside University at 1 p.m. CT.
