(UJ) The Jimmie women’s basketball team used a big second quarter to build a nine-point lead, then held off a pesky Concordia (Neb.) University full-court press in the second half for a 79-72 win over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bulldogs led by seven after Megan Belt’s three-pointer made it 14-7 with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
  • Kia Tower and Hannah DeMars sank three-pointers of their own, and Kate Busek added a basket as UJ took a 15-14 lead at the 1:37 mark.
  • CUNE went back in front after Abby Krieser scored on the next trip down the floor, and the quarter ended 16-15.
  • Tower and DeMars each had five points to lead Jamestown in the first quarter.
  • The second quarter featured seven lead changes and one tie, with a Tower three at the 5:03 mark giving UJ a 24-22 lead.
  • Jamestown outscored the Bulldogs 19-9 to end the half with a 40-31 advantage.
  • DeMars had 10 points and six rebounds to give her a first half of 15 points and nine rebounds.
  • Audrey Rodakowski‘s first points of the game opened the third quarter and made it 42-31 with 9:34 left.
  • Concordia responded with an 8-0 run over the next 1:09 to trim the deficit to three, but the Jimmies used a Tower three and a Jailyn Martinson basket to go back in front by eight.

  • Concordia scored eight straight points to get within 72-67, but UJ made their last seven free throws to help put the game away.

  • Jamestown shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the floor, including 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from three.
  • DeMars posted her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 25 points and tied a career high with 17 rebounds.
  • Tower was also in double figures with 17 points along with Kate Cordes (10).
  • Tower and Busek each dished out four assists.
  • Five players had two or more three-pointers, led by DeMars with four.

CONCORDIA GAME NOTES

  • Concordia shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, including 40 percent (12-of-30) from three.
  • Taysha Rushton had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, followed by Krieser with 14 and Belt with 10.
  • Sadie Powell grabbed a team-high six rebounds and joined Kendal Brigham with four assists.
  • Belt was 4-of-6 on three-point attempts

(UJ) Backed by a 17-point halftime lead, the No. 14 Jimmie men’s basketball team overcame 36 percent shooting in the second half to defeat Concordia (Neb.) University 69-64 Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A 13-0 run capped off by a Will Cordes three-pointer helped Jamestown take a 16-5 lead with 11:53 in the first half.
  • The lead grew to as many as 19 points three different times before the half ended 41-24.
  • UJ shot 54 percent (15-of-28) in the first half while holding the Bulldogs to 33 percent (9-of-27).
  • Mason Walters scored 11 and Cole Woodford 10 in the first, just three points less than Concordia.
  • The lead stayed between 11 and 19 points until the Bulldogs began chipping away with 8:20 remaining.
  • CUNE outscored UJ 20-7 over a stretch of 7:24 to get within 66-62 after Garrett Seagran’s basket at the 1:20 mark.
  • Woodford’s three-pointer with 6:14 to play was Jamestown’s last field goal until Reid Gastner scored with 0:25 left. In between, the Jimmies’ five points came from the free throw line.
  • The Jamestown defense held the Bulldogs to just three second-half offensive rebounds.

  • Jamestown shot 45 percent (24-for-53) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three.
  • Woodford and Walters both had 18 points to lead UJ.
  • Walters finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
  • Marc Kjos passed out four assists and Cooper Olson added three steals.

CONCORDIA GAME NOTES

  • Concordia shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor, including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three.
  • Gage Smith had 19 points and eight rebounds.
  • Seagran finished with 18 points and Bradley Bennett was also in double figures with 10.
  • Bennett added seven tebounds and four assists.

FREMONT, Neb. (UJ) — The 14th-ranked Jimmie women’s hockey team played its first road game of 2023 Saturday afternoon at No. 3 Midland University. Single goals in the second and third periods ended up being the difference as the Warriors came away with a 3-1 victory.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ally Rakowski took a Kayla Flanigan pass and beat UJ goalie Makenzie Gibson to give Midland a 1-0 lead at 5:15 of the first.
  • Ashton Lee netted her second goal of the season to tie the game at 17:19 of the first, with an assist by Madison Knudson.
  • The assist was the first of the season for Knudson.
  • While the Jimmies were on the power play, Rakowski and Flanigan paired up again, this time shorthanded, at 13:50 of the second to break the 1-1 tie. Rakowski’s goal was her 20th of the season.
  • Callie Maguire rounded out the scoring in the third with a power play goal at 1:30. Keagan Shearer was credited with the assist.
  • Gibson faced 27 shots over the first two periods, stopping 25. She finished the game with 31 saves.
  • Jamestown was 0-for-7 on the power play while Midland was 1-of-6

WEST DUNDEE, Ill. (UJ)– Zane MacDonald set a new single-game record with five assists and Jordan Baranesky tied the record for most goals in a game with four as the fourth-ranked Jimmie men’s hockey team dominated Northern Illinois University 15-2 Saturday evening.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jake Huculak, Greg Susinski, Baranesky, and Morgan Venne each scored in the first period as UJ led 4-0 after one.
  • The Jimmies’ first three goals came in a span of 6:50, with Baranesky and Venne each scoring on the power play.
  • Jamestown outshot NIU 42-2 in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Brad Fortin had an assist on each of the first three goals while MacDonald assisted on the last two. Logan Berggren, Justin Dumont, and Reid Wilson, who had a hat trick Friday, also chipped in with helpers.
  • The floodgates opened in the second period as UJ lit the lamp seven times on 32 shots.
  • Baranesky scored at 0:21, 2:49, and 14:06, pushing his goal total to 17 on the year.
  • Gage Thompson had a pair of goals in the second period and Philippe Lessard and Reid Wilson also scored.
  • NIU got on the board with a power play goal at 6:34, then added another goal at the 14:47 mark.
  • Venne, Huculak, Fortin, and Berggren tallied third period goals to extend the lead to 15-2.
  • NIU was called for 13 penalties totalling 79 minutes, while UJ was whistled for seven infractions covering 30 minutes.
  • Shots ended 94-12 in favor of the Jimmies. Brandon Weare stopped 10 shots and allowed two goals for just the third time in his last 11 starts.
  • The Jimmies were 6-of-8 on the power play.

  • MacDonald’s five assists broke the prevous record of four held by Trevor Okino (February 9, 2019) and Brandon Schaber (December 2, 2017).
  • Baranesky tied Dylan Haney (October 31, 2019) with four goals in a game.
  • MacDonald (five assists), Baranesky (four goals, one assist), Morgan Venne (two goals, three assists), and Brad Fortin (one goal, four assists) all joined Andrew Clark (two goals, three assists on Friday) in tying the UJ record of five total points in a game.
  • Fourteen players finished with at least one point and 11 had multiple-point games.
  • The Jimmies finished the two game set against NIU with 27 goals on 167 shots, while allowing only two goals on 23 shots.

  • Three goals in each of the first and second periods helped stake the Jimmies to a 6-2 win on Saturday.
