Jamestown, ND – Five straight hits in the bottom of the seventh led to a three-run rally for the Jimmie softball team Saturday afternoon at Trapper Field as Jamestown split a doubleheader with Morningside (Iowa) University in the regular season finale for both teams.
Jamestown enters the postseason at 24-20 overall, including 11-11 in the GPAC. Morningside falls to 31
12 and 16-6 in the conference.
Game 1: Morningside 6, UJ 4
Two runs in the second and two more in the fourth put the Mustangs ahead 4-0, and the Jimmies lost 6-4 in Saturday’s first game.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Megan Neiles doubled and then scored on Sunny Halsey‘s single up the middle. One out later, Trinity Gregg hit an opposite-field home run as the Jimmies made it a one-run game at 4-3.
Morningside added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth to make it 6-3. Ally Battistoni singled to right field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4, but the Jimmies were unable to complete the comeback.
Samarah Martinez and Mackenzie Lefebvre also had hits for Jamestown. Halsey pitched a complete game, with only two earned runs out of the six she allowed. She struck out five and walked one.
Game 2: UJ 7, Morningside 6
Angie Chin singled to score Sonya Rodgers with the winning run as the Jimmies came from behind for a 7-6 win in the bottom of the seventh.
Gracie Fisher began the string of five straight hits with a single to right and moved to second on Ally Battistoni‘s single to center. Kylie Yanzuk came on to run for Fisher and scored on a Megan Neiles single to make it 6-5. Kayla Quintanilla followed with a single up the middle to plate Battistoni and move Neiles to second. Rodgers replaced Neiles as a runner and slid under the throw home from the outfield on Chin’s base hit to left.
Maddie Spaeth and Samarah Martinez each had an RBI as UJ led 2-0 going into the fourth. That inning saw a pair of two-run homers by Morningside put the visitors in front 4-2, but the lead was short-lived. The Jimmies’ first run in the bottom of the fourth came as Quintanilla reached on an error by the pitcher, which led to another error by the first baseman allowing Battistoni to score and the two runners move up a base. With runners on second and third, Martinez reached on a fielder’s choice to score Quintanilla and tie the game at 4-4.
Chin and Neiles each had three of UJ’s 15 hits. Martinez, Quintanilla, and Trinity Gregg all added a pair of base hits.
Hailey Schaefer (8-2) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief for the win. Abby Blair struck out four in 3 2/3 innings but was not involved in the decision.
