The Valley City Community Band, under the guidance of director Rochelle Jimenez, is set to provide a night of free music at 6:30 PM on August 10, 2023, at the City Park Band Shell in Valley City.

The band members, comprising a diverse group of musicians from around the city, have been working hard to prepare an assortment of pieces that will excite the audience, and leave them humming tunes long after the last note has faded. With a vibrant mix of genres and styles, the concert promises to have something for everyone.

The concert will kick off with the theme from The Pink Panther, a piece that showcases the band’s energetic approach. Next up, the band will deliver a moving rendition of Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from his famous Enigma Variations. “Nimrod” is a slow, deeply-moving favorite that resonates with audiences of all ages. As the concert progresses, the audience will be treated to the lively beats of Takarajima, a Japanese jazz composition that will no doubt have everyone tapping their feet to the rhythm.

Of particular interest to Valley City locals will be a performance of Stuart Glaser’s Old West Rhapsody. Glaser’s name will no doubt be familiar to long-time residents of Valley City due to his long tenure as a member of the music department at VCSU. The grand finale of the concert will be the theme to Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles, a number that is sure to leave the audience (and the band) ending the evening on a high note.

The band concert at the City Park Band Shell is a free event, open to all, reinforcing the spirit of unity that music fosters. Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets or folding chairs.
