The University of Jamestown baseball team combined for 27 runs and 30 in a doubleheader sweep of Mayville State (N.D.) University Monday evening at Jack Brown Stadium. The Jimmies took game one 15-6 and were 12-2 winners in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED–GAME ONE

  • The Jimmies pushed home four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead. A Comet error led to the first two runs while Hayden Brown and Jett Nelson both drove in runs.
  • Jackson Bonneville and Julian Romero had two-run hits in the bottom of the fourth, part of a seven-run outburst that made it 11-0. 
  • Nelson and Ryan Muizelaar each had RBI singles in the fifth to build a 13-0 Jimmie lead.
  • Mayville State put together five hits, including a two-ruin home run by Zach Evanochko, in the top of the sixth to get within 13-5.
  • UJ answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Payton Smith singling home Riki Okamoto and Nelson doubling in RJ Woods.
  • A solo homer by Chris Shopbell rounded out the scoring for the Comets in the top of the seventh.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Nelson finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and four RBI.
  • Chase Burke went 3-for-4 and stole a base.
  • Ryan Radkey (1-0) struck out four and gave up two hits while pitching five scoreless innings in his Jimmie debut.
  • Brown, Bonneville, Romero, and Jordan Singleton all had two RBI.

FOR THE COMETS

  • Shopbell was 3-for-4 and Evanochko 2-for-3 to lead MSU.
  • Gregor Farquharson (0-1) started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits, walking two and strikiing out two.
  • Riley Rankin and Channing Lenoir both had a stolen base.

HOW IT HAPPENED–GAME TWO

  • Once again UJ was the first team on the scoreboard, thanks to a two-run triple by Alex Alva in the bottom of the second. 
  • Triston Madison homered to lead off the bottom of the third to make it 3-0 UJ.
  • The Comets used a leadoff double by Chris Shopbell and a single by Michael Feralio to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth.
  • The Jimmies broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Alva, a two-run home run by Jordan Singleton, and a solo home run by Hayden Brown.
  • Alva’s sacrifice fly scored Ryan Muizelaar to make it 10-1, then Madison singled home Chase Burke and later scored on a wild pitch for the final three Jimmie runs.
  • MSU scored their final run on a groundout in the top of the sixth.

 FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Jack Howard (1-0) struck out six in 4 2/3 innings and gave up one run on four hits to get the win.
  • Ethan KruppConnor Nipp, and Julian Sansores worked the final 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing just one unearned run while striking out two.
  • Alva finished 3-for-3 with 5 RBI while Madison and Muizelaar also had three hits.
  • Burke stole two of the Jimmies’ three bases

FOR THE COMETS

  • Shopbell, Feralio, Anthony Villanueva, and Channing Lenoir had hits for the Comets.
  • Connor Cory (0-1) took the loss for MSU, giving up four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
  • Four Comet relievers gave up eight runs over the final 2 2/3 innings.
