NDHP – On January 4, 2024 at approximately 3:30 AM CST, a 2008 Mack Truck (CMV), was southbound on Highway 3 near mile marker 222 when it left the roadway to its right, vaulted off an approach and came to final rest in the west ditch.
After the CMV came to final rest in the ditch, two passing vehicles stopped to help. One vehicle, a 2010 Ford Mustang, stopped in the southbound lane with the vehicle canted to shine its lights on the CMV. The other vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, stopped nearby and was partially in the northbound lane. Both drivers exited their vehicles to help the CMV.
A short time after, a 2001 Ford Taurus was northbound and rear-ended the parked Silverado. This caused the Taurus to rotate and strike the Mustang. The Silverado and Mustang were unoccupied during the crash.
The driver of the CMV was transported with serious, non-life-threatening injuries to the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby. The driver and passenger of the Ford Taurus were transported with minor injuries to the Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Hospital in Belcourt as well as the Presentation Medical Center in Rolla.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
