FREMONT, Neb.—After falling 15-2 in five innings against No. 13 Midland University in game one of Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader, the University of Jamestown softball team rallied for a 3-1 nine-inning win in the second game to hand the Warriors their first loss in conference play this season.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

Midland got to Jimmie starter Abby Blair (8-6) for four runs on six hits in the first inning, and she lasted one-third of an inning before Sunny Halsey came on in relief.

Gentrey Turin‘s two-run double in the top of the second scored Ally Battistoni and Maddie Spaeth to cut Midland’s lead in half, but that would be the only scoring for the Jimmies.

The Warriors tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to make it 5-2, and the score stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth. Midland broke out for 10 runs on seven hits against a pair of UJ pitchers and ended the game via the run rule.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

Jamestown held on to a slim 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Warriors scored an unearned run to send the game to extra innings.

Samarah Martinez doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth to score Gentrey Turin and Maddie Spaeth, and the Jimmies came away with a 3-1 win.

Prior to the seventh, the game’s only run came in the top of the third. Turin led off the inning with a walk and took second base on Trinity Gregg‘s sacrifice bunt. A passed ball moved Turin to third base, and one out later, Kayla Quintanilla doubled to right center as Turin easily came home to make it 1-0.

Midland got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the seventh as Matti Reiling singled to right field.

Jayci Reimers followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Reiling to second base, but the Jimmies had left third base uncovered and Reiling took the extra base.

With one out and a runner at third, UJ pitcher Hope Ransome got Halle Meyer to pop out to Turin at second for out number two.

Ariyana Crafton drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Midland’s leadoff hitter, Emily Prai. While Crafton stole second base, Quintanilla tried to catch Reiling a few steps off the bag at third, but her throw was off-target and went into the outfield. Reiling came home with the tying run.

Ransome (9-4) pitched her best game of the season since firing a two-hit shutout against Tabor (Kan.) on March 4 in Tucson, Ariz., going all nine innings while giving up just one unearned run. She allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out eight.

Gregg, Martinez, and Quintanilla—the first three hitters in the UJ lineup—each had two hits and combined to drive in all three Jimmie runs. Gregg also swiped a pair of bases and Quintanilla added another.
