MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State University track and field won a conference title, added a new national qualifier and picked up six All-Conference honors on day one of the North Star Athletic Association Conference Championships.
Kendra Odegard’s title in the women’s javelin headlined the first day of competition on Thursday in Madison, S.D. Odegard threw a career-best distance of 46.55 meters (152 feet, 8 inches) to win the conference title for the third year in a row. That is also the top throw in the NAIA this season heading into the national meet, May 22-24 in Marion, Ind.
VCSU junior Sadie Hansen will also be competing at the national meet as she hit the NAIA “B” National Qualifying Standard in the javelin competition Thursday. Hansen’s mark of 39.95 meters was good for 2nd place at the meet behind Odegard and surpassed the national qualifying mark of 39.50 meters. It will be Hansen’s first time competing at the national meet.
Odegard and Hansen each earned All-Conference honors, which go to the Top 3 individuals in each event. Valley City State finished with day with a first place (Odegard), four second-place finishes and a third place.
Freshman Karina Olson took second place in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.82 seconds. Senior Jasmine Barnes placed second in the women’s 10,000 meter run, recording a career-best time of 41 minutes, 50.17 seconds.
Cameron Champagnie placed 2nd in the men’s triple jump, finishing with a top mark of 13.72 meters (45 feet, 0.25 inches).
In the women’s triple jump, Emma Muggli placed third with a career-best jump of 10.55 meters (34 feet, 7.5 inches).
The Top 8 finishers in each event earn team points at the conference meet. The Viking men are currently 4th with 38 points. The VCSU women are also 4th with 60 points. Six teams are competing.
The NSAA Championships conclude with a full day of events on Friday. Action starts at 10 a.m.
