UND – North Dakota head women’s basketball coach Mallory Bernhard announced the addition of Fenwick, Ontario native Sydney Piekny to the 2024-25 roster.
“We are very excited about Sydney choosing to be a Hawk,” said Bernhard. “Her length and ability to shoot the three will be a great asset to our team and she comes from a very good program with great coaching and has a college ready level understanding of the game.”
Piekny started all 15 games during the 2023-24 season as a member of Niagara Prep in the OSBA and was the team’s second leading scorer at 11.9 points per game. She scored in double-figures in each of the last five games of the season, while averaging 16.6 points per game over that stretch. Piekny knocked down multiple three-pointers in six games, including a season-high five triples in back-to-back games against Lincoln Prep W and Louis-Riel. Pienky ended the season among the top of the OSBA in made three-pointers. Following a 23-point performance against Lincoln Prep W, Piekny notched her first double-double against Louis-Riel on Feb. 10 with 21 points and 11 rebounds including seven offensive boards.
Piekny was active on the glass throughout the season, pulling down three or more offensive rebounds in six games and 33 total offensive boards. She was also disruptive on the other end of the floor averaging 1.9 steals per game, had eight games with two or more steals and swiped a season-high five against Louis-Riel on Feb. 3.
Piekny was also a member of the U16 and U17 Kia Nurse Elite AAU team. She was named a First Team All-Star at the Niagara College Hoops Classic as a freshman and was selected as a U17 Team Ontario Alternate. She was a member of the Honor Roll every year of high school, achieved a B1 Level DELF Certificate and was a recipient of the Dina Rigas Leadership Award.
