VCPD – On August 20, 2024, a resident of Valley City reported to the Valley City Police Department that they were a victim of a possible scam The resident called a phone number due to a pop-up on their personal computer. While on the phone, the resident thought they were getting help and were convinced through high-pressure tactics to send $34,000 to an address in California. This was all part of a scam. Through investigation, members of the VCPD discovered the package had not been delivered and were able to get a message out in time to stop the delivery.
Today, the resident received their money back. It is a rare occurrence when we are able to intercept the money before it is delivered. The Valley City Police Department wants to remind everyone to never send money, gift cards, or wired money due to a text message, email, phone call to someone you do not personally know or have done business with in the past. Scam artists have become very creative with their tactics to take your hard-earned money. If you receive a message, a phone call, or a text message and are not sure if it is a scam, please do not hesitate to call the Valley City Police Department.
