GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota Volleyball Head Coach Jesse Tupac has announced the hiring of Henry Yip as the program’s newest assistant coach.

Yip boasts experience across all NCAA levels in addition to a heavy involvement in the club volleyball and high school circuits. He joins Tupac’s staff from Boston where he previously served as an assistant coach for the Harvard women’s volleyball team and as a volunteer assistant for the Merrimack College men’s volleyball team.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Henry to Grand Forks,” said Tupac. “He brings a unique skillset to UND with a background at the NCAA level coaching both Men’s and Women’s collegiate volleyball. Henry is also incredibly passionate about the athletes he works with and is hungry to be great.  He is a perfect example of what we strive for everyday as Fighting Hawks, to be great for and with each other.  Welcome Henry and Go Hawks!”

This past spring at Merrimack, Yip helped a trio of Warriors earn All-NEC awards with libero Kyle Standage, middle blocker Matthew Motes and outside hitter Logan Whitaker all receiving second-team honors.

In his lone season at Harvard, which resulted in the Crimson winning 15 matches and earning a berth to the Ivy League Tournament, Yip aided a trio of Crimson women who garnered All-Ivy League honors with setter/hitter Ashley Wang receiving first-team honors and outside hitter Katie Vorhies and middle blocker Ryleigh Patterson earning second-team recognition. Wang was also named a third-team academic all-America selection.

“I would like to thank Coach Tupac and the University of North Dakota for this opportunity,” noted Yip. “The community here in Grand Forks was the first thing that stuck out to me. You can really feel the care and the support from everyone here. On the court, the staff and players have created an environment that is relentless and fun. The excitement in the gym is palpable, and I can’t wait to get started! Go Hawks!”

Prior to his time in Boston, Yip coached for one season at NCAA Division II Frostburg State (MD). In 2022, Yip and the Bobcats won 16 matches with two players receiving end-of-the-year honors as outside hitter Beverly Braun was named an All-Mountain East Conference second teamer and outside/right-side hitter Joie Allen was placed on the All-MEC freshman team.

Yip’s first experience at the collegiate level came at NCAA Division III Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a volunteer assistant with the Engineers’ men’s program. MIT won 13 matches that spring with outside hitter Jack Yurkanin being named honorable mention All-United Volleyball Conference.

Yip has also assisted several high schools and volleyball clubs in and around New England including Wellesley HS, Notre Dame Academy Hingham, North Quincy HS, MGA Girls VC, MGA Boys VC, Southern Alliance VC and Mass Patriots VC.

Yip is a 2019 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology.
