Steele, ND (KFYR) – At approximately 8:19 p.m. Wednesday, a train was stopped in Steele due to an active tornado warning in the area. Approximately 43 empty coal cars derailed.

There were no injuries to the crew and no hazmat involved. BNSF personnel are on site working to clear the incident as quickly and safely as possible.

ORIGINAL STORY (8/29/2024 at 5:40 a.m.): A confirmed tornado Wednesday night between 7 and 9 p.m. near Steele derailed 43 BNSF rail cars. The train was stopped because of the tornado, and the cars were empty at the time. There were no injuries.

Cleanup started around 1 a.m. There is no timeline for when cleanup will be finished.
