MAYVILLE, N.D. –The University of Jamestown baseball team opened its fall schedule with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Mayville State University, splitting with the Comets after winning game one 6-1 and dropping game two 7-5.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Jamestown 6, Mayville State 1; Mayville State 7, Jamestown 5

GAME ONE: JAMESTOWN 6, MAYVILLE STATE 1
• Chase Burke put the Jimmies on the board in the top of the third with a single to right center field to score Ben Swennumson. The Comets responded with a single run in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
• Jamestown retook the lead in the top of the fourth. Ryan Muizelaar led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, then came home on Trever Goforth‘s groundout to make it 2-1.
• UJ added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With runners at first and second, Burke doubled to left, scoring Swennumson. Alex Alva followed with a single to center field that brought in Burke and Sy Steele. One out later, Alva stole third, and a wild throw by MSU catcher Riley Rankin allowed Alva to come home.
• Avery Liestman pitched a gem for the Jimmies, scattering six hits and giving up only one earned run while striking out five in seven complete innings.
• Burke, Alva, and Muizelaar each finished 2-for-4 in game one at the plate.

GAME TWO: MAYVILLE STATE 7, JAMESTOWN 5
• The Comets got to Jimmie starter Luke Zimmer for three runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
• UJ managed to cut into the lead with a two-run second inning, with runs scoring on a sacrifice fly by Keegan Neva and a steal of home by Ryan Muizelaar.
 • MSU answered with a single run in the bottom of the second and tacked on two more in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-2.
• With one out in the top of the sixth, singles by Ben Patton, Neva, and Will Bachman drove in runs to help the Jimmies cut the deficit to 6-5. The Comets got one run back in the bottom of the sixth and retired Jamestown in order in the seventh to take the victory.
• Zimmer was charged with the loss, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) with four  strikeouts in his three innings of work.
• Chase Burke (2-for-3) and Patton (2-for-3) had multi-hit games for the Jimmies.

FOR THE FOES
• Carson Lundmark was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs in game two for MSU.

• Jamestown hosts Mayville State on Wednesday, September 18 in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Jack Brown Stadium.
