VALLEY CITY, N.D.—The third-ranked University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team won its North Star Athletic Association opening match Thursday evening with a 3-0 sweep of Valley City State (N.D.) at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

The record so far is Jamestown 9-0 overall, 1-0 NSAA; Valley City State 9-5 overall, 1-1 NSAA.

Charlotte Lempka‘s kill late in the first set broke a 17-17 tie and helped Jamestown finish off the Vikings by scoring eight of the last nine points. Neither team led by more than two points in the opener until an ace by Ellie Holen put UJ in front 20-17.

The Jimmies dominated set two on the strength of 12 straight points that turned a slim 10-8 lead into a more comfortable 20-8 advantage. Jamestown outhit VCSU .312 to (-.036) in the frame, and put 14 balls to the floor compared to 7 for the home team.

UJ kept the Vikings at arm’s length in the third set. Karlie Anderson‘s kill gave the Jimmies a 10-6 lead that gradually grew to seven (16-9). VCSU got as close at 20-16, then a kill by Gracie Adamson began a stretch of five straight points that finished the set and the match.

Jamestown outhit VCSU .287 to .048 and finished with 48 kills to the Vikings’ 23.

Lempka and Lexi Olson tied for the team lead with 11 kills and the duo of Adamson and Aleah Zieske added 9 kills each.

Tenley Buddenhagen passed out a match-high 23 assists and added 8 digs. Lily Bertsch recorded 17 assists.

Ellie Holen led all players with 22 digs and Olson had a season-high 7 block assists.

UJ avenged a three-set loss at Valley City State on October 11 of last season. The loss was the second in three matches for the Vikings, who were 7-1 in their previous eight.

The Jimmies travel to Mayville, N.D., to face Mayville State University on Friday, September 20. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
