(CSi) – The Jamestown Public School Board met January 20 and made a unanimous decision to close Washington Elementary School after the 2024/25 school year. The following is a letter written by Superintendent Rob Lech to Washington Elementary School parents in regards to the closure:
“Dear Washington Elementary Families,
We want to take a moment to share an important update regarding the future of Washington Elementary. After careful consideration and thoughtful discussions, the Jamestown School Board has made the difficult decision to retire Washington Elementary at the end of the 2024/2025 school year. This decision was not made lightly and it reflects the district and board’s commitment to ensuring the best possible educational opportunities for all students in our district.
We understand that Washington Elementary holds a special place in the hearts of our students, families, staff, and community. Please know that our focus moving forward is to support you through this transition and to provide the resources and guidance needed to make it as smooth as possible.
As we move forward, we are committed to working closely with families to ensure a positive transition. Here’s what you can expect:
Availability and Support: Our team will be available to answer questions and provide assistance throughout this process.
A survey tool will be deployed in the next week to gather questions regarding this change. These questions will be used to create a comprehensive FAQ to help answer key questions on the impact of the retirement of Washington. There will also be a sharing of resources, such as the results of the boundary study that determines elementary attendance zones. As needed, we will also consider informational sessions and sharing of resources, including the comprehensive FAQ, to address questions and concerns.
Student Transition Planning: We will offer opportunities for students to visit their new schools, meet teachers/staff, and feel comfortable in their new learning environment.
Ongoing Communication: We will keep you informed to ensure that you have opportunities to share your thoughts and feedback.
We know that change can bring uncertainty, and we want you to know that we are here to support you. Your children’s well-being and educational success remain our top priority, and we are committed to making this transition as positive and supportive as possible.
Thank you for your continued partnership, trust, and support. We are grateful for the Washington Elementary community and look forward to working together during this time of change. Ultimately, we want the rest of this school year to be one that honors Washington Elementary, its impact on the community, and provides a good transition for students and families to the 2025/2026 SY.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Rob Lech, Superintendent
Jamestown Public School District #1″
